Hartford, CT - The Hartford Wolf Pack fell at home to the Hamilton Bulldogs, 4-1, Saturday night in front of a crowd of 3,370 at the XL Center.
David Desharnais scored the game winner and added an assist, and P.K. Subban had a goal and two assists, to lead the Bulldogs.
The Wolf Pack carried the bulk of the play in the first period, outshooting the Bulldogs 14-7, but were unable to solve Hamilton goaltender Curtis Sanford (25 saves).
Sanford stopped several Hartford scoring chances, making big saves on both Corey Locke and Matt Gilroy, on a power play. Hartford goaltender Steve Valiquette (30 saves) was just as good in the first, making a pair of saves on Greg Stewart and stopping a Ryan White breakaway at 4:42.
The Bulldogs then opened the scoring with the first of three second period goals at 5:09, taking the 1-0 lead as Mathieu Carle put a slap shot from the blue line past Valiquette after taking a pass from Alex Henry.
Hartford evened the score just under three minutes later at 8:06, when Brodie Dupont rushed down the left wing and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Sanford for his sixth goal of the season.
But Hamilton again took the lead at 10:38, this time on a five-on-three power-play after Gilroy was called for delay of game. Desharnais scored off the rebound of a shot taken by Subban, Desharnais' eleventh goal of the season.
The Bulldogs' lead was then extended with Subban's sixth goal, which made it 3-1 at 12:42 after he pushed in a puck behind Valiquette that was sitting on the line for Hamilton's second power-play score.
Sanford would not give the Wolf Pack anything in the third period, making eight saves and again stopping Locke, who along with Gilroy led Hartford with four shots, with a diving save at 6:36.
White capped the Bulldogs' scoring, as he skated through the slot alone and scored his fourth goal of the year for the 4-1 Hamilton advantage at 15:09
"We've got some players playing a lot of hockey, giving all they got," said Hartford head coach Ken Gernander. "And we've got others content to settle into smaller roles that need to expand their chests and pitch in."
The loss sent the Wolf Pack's record to 15-13-1-3 and 34 points, and they remain tied for fifth place in the Atlantic Division with the Worcester Sharks.
Hartford will return after the Christmas break with road games in Bridgeport and Springfield, before returning home to face the Springfield Falcons at the XL Center on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 7.
