'Wolves Fall 6-3 to Connecticut

The SeaWolves could not complete a series sweep of the Connecticut Defenders on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park, falling by a score of 6-3.

The Defenders struck first in the top of the first against Erie starter Luis Marte. Antoan Richardson stepped in with one out and he connected on a solo-home run, his fifth, for a 1-0 lead.

Connecticut added pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Simon Klink led off with a double and Carlos Sosa singled to put runners on the corners for Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Martinez-Esteve grounded out to third, scoring Klink for a 2-0 lead. Sosa would later score on a wild pitch by Marte for a 3-0 lead.

The Defenders again added a pair in the next inning when Carlos Sosa singled home a Matt Witter and Klink with two outs for a 5-0 lead.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the bottom of the seventh against Connecticut starter Joey Martinez. Heading into the inning, Martinez had retired 12 straight and had not allowed a hit since the third. Wilkin Ramirez led off with a walk and Jeff Frazier doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Santo De Leon hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ramirez, making it 5-1. Pedro Cotto followed with a double scoring Frazier, cutting the Defenders lead down to three runs at 5-2.

The Defenders would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth against reliever Angel Castro. Richardson walked with two outs and he was tripled home by Olmo Rosario for a 6-2 lead.

The SeaWolves got one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut it to a 6-3 game. Deik Scram led off with a walk and he score on a two-out error. Erie would get no closer falling by that score.

Marte (3-3) took the loss for the ‘Wolves going 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. The loss broke a string of three consecutive wins for Marte.
