'Wolves Drop Soggy Series Finale
May 1, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves waited through a nearly two-hour rain delay on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark and dropped the series finale to the Altoona Curve, 6-5. The âWolves are now two games under .500.
The âWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Altoona starter Aaron Thompson. Jamie Johnson led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on a Brandon Douglas base knock. With one out, Rawley Bishop doubled home the baserunners for a 2-0 lead.
Altoona tied the game in the bottom of the first against Erie starter L.J. Gagnier. Brock Holt led off with a triple and he scored on a Starling Marte base hit, making it 2-1. With one out, Jordy Mercer sent a fly ball to center and on a Jamie Johnson error, Marte scored from second, tying the game at 2-2.
Altoona took the lead in the second. Eric Fryer led off and single but was retired at second on a fielder's choice of the bat of Brad Chalk. Chalk stole second and scored on a two-out single from Marte giving Altoona a 3-2 advantage.
The âWolves tied up the game in the top of the fourth. Justin Henry singled with one out and stole second. Henry came around to score from second on a wild pitch from Thompson, tying the game at 3-3.
The Curve regained its lead in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Jared Gayhart. Miles Durham led off with a single and was sacrificed over to second on a Fryer bunt. Durham moved to third on a Chalk groundout and scored on a Holt single for a 4-3 Curve lead.
Erie went back ahead in the top of the eighth against Altoona reliever Michael Dubee. After retiring the first two hitters, Francisco Martinez struck out for what would have been the final out. However, a wild pitch allowed Martinez to reach base. Henry followed with a walk putting the tying and go-ahead runs on base for Shawn Roof. Roof, who had been 0-for-3 on the day, laced a double down the left field line, plating Martinez and Henry for a 5-4 Erie lead.
The lead did not hold long as the Curve struck right back in the bottom of the eighth. Tony Sanchez led off and walked against reliever Austin Wood. The âWolves went to the pen again bringing in Chance Ruffin. Miles Durham sacrificed Sanchez into scoring position. With two outs, Chalk lifted an RBI double down the left field line, tying the game. Holt followed and sent a ground ball to short, beat it out for an infield single, and on a throwing error by Audy Ciriaco, Chalk scored from second for a 6-5 Curve lead.
Chance Ruffin (1-2) took the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits.
The SeaWolves continue their seven-game road trip on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium against the Binghamton Mets...6:35 First Pitch.
