Overbeck Rips Two Bombs, R-Phils Beat 'Dogs 3-2
May 1, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Reading, PA - Cody Overbeck entered the game on Sunday as the Eastern League leader in home runs and RBIs. In two at-bats, he would add to those totals.
Overbeck launched two mammoth home runs, Austin Hyatt allowed two runs over six innings, and the Reading Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs with a 3-2 victory at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A native of Tennesee, Overbeck, 24, earned Eastern League Player of the Week honors earlier this year, and looks to be back on a tear. He now leads the league with eight home runs and 22 RBIs and is hitting an impressive .337 on the season. He finished Sunday's affair 2-2 with the two long balls, two RBIs, and two walks - one intentionally. Originally selected by the Phillies in the ninth round of the 2008 draft, Overbeck hit 24 home runs last season between Clearwater (A+) and Reading.
Hyatt (3-1, 3.00) was effective on the afternoon en-route to his third win of the season. The Atlanta, GA native fanned five batters over six innings - allowing two runs on five hits to earn the win. It was his first win since back on April 13, when he was in the midst of a two-gae win streak. Reliever Tyson Brummett tossed two scoreless innings and Justin De Fratus avoided two hits and a walk in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
The win for the first-place R-Phils was their fifth-straight of the season -- their longest winning streak of the year. Reading (16-7) will begin a four-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (12-9) on Monday evening at America's Classic Ballpark. The two clubs met earlier this season in New Hampshire and the R-Phils earned a three-game sweep. The Fisher Cats trail the R-Phils by three games in the Eastern Division.
LHP Ryan Edell (2-0, 4.44) takes the mound for the R-Phils in game one. Edell, a native of Boston, MA, has yet to win a game at home this season in two tries, but has pitched well. The 27-year-old is 0-0 with a 2.92 ERA over 12.1 innings pitched at FirstEnergy Stadium this season - he's fanned 13 batters over that time. In his last start of the season, back on April 27, Edell went seven innings against Erie to earn the win.
RHP Rey Gonzalez (2-1, 1.88) will take the hill for New Hampshire in Monday's opener. Gonzalez, 25, will be making his fifth start of the season and second against the R-Phils this season. The Cuban-born Gonzalez allowed just two runs over six innings against the R-Phils on April 13 - but was saddled with the loss. He's 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA on the road in one start this season.
Coverage begins with the R-Phils pre-game show at 6:05 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1240 AM WIOV. R-Phils play-by-play broadcaster Brian Seltzer will have the call for all of the action. First-pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
