West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
PEORIA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps pulled off their second sweep of a doubleheader in the past week with wins over the Peoria Chiefs by scores of 4-2 and 3-2 in front of 1,381 fans Thursday night at Dozer Park.
Back on June 27, the Whitecaps completed a sweep of the Dayton Dragons with a 12-10 victory at LMCU Ballpark, but the contests on Thursday both took on the form of pitcher's duels as West Michigan improved their record back over the .500 mark at 25-24.
In Game 1, infielder Andrew Navigato, who joined the team before the series, blasted his first home run with a solo shot in the second. In the following inning, the infielder came through again with a two-out, two-run single to give West Michigan a 4-1 lead. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Brendan White (2-1) collected his third straight quality start by tossing six innings and allowing just two runs in picking up his second win of the season. Bryce Tassin tossed a scoreless final frame to earn his first save as a Whitecap.
In Game 2, the Whitecaps got their only three base hits in the first inning, but a two-run homer from Bryant Packard proved to be too much for Peoria to overcome as part of the 3-2 victory in the nightcap. On the mound, pitcher Adam Wolf retired the first 14 batters he faced and carried a no-hitter in the seventh and final inning before a leadoff infield single by Jordan Walker led to a two-run seventh to slim the lead to 3-2. After Wolf exited, Zack Hess came on to clinch the victory and earn his third save of the season.
The Whitecaps improve to 25-24 on the season as Peoria drops to 19-32. Daniel Cabrera collected a pair of hits as the Whitecaps drew seven walks in Game 1 while Navigato tallied two of the Whitecaps three extra-base hits in the doubleheader.
