Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - A decisive fourth inning provided all of the scoring Friday in a 3-1 Quad Cities River Bandits win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Modern Woodmen Park. Quad Cities (34-16) picked up its third triumph in a row while securing a 3-1 series lead versus Cedar Rapids (27-25).
A.J. Block (1-1) and Tyler Beck (1-1) were locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel through the first three innings. Block worked around an Alex Isola double in the opening stanza while Beck only yielded a Tucker Bradley double during the third.
Isola opened the fourth with a go-ahead home run. His dinger off the foul pole in right field was his career-high sixth blast of the year and carried the Kernels to a 1-0 lead. Block kept Cedar Rapids scoreless for the rest of his start and finished with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings while earning the win.
Defensive miscues helped the River Bandits swing in front, 3-1, within the home half of the fourth. Michael Massey's RBI groundball drove in Eric Cole and led to a fielding error. Two batters later, an error during a potential inning-ending double play allowed Massey to tally the go-ahead run. Jimmy Govern padded the lead by scoring on William Hancock's single. Beck was tagged with three runs surrendered including two unearned runs and received his first loss this season.
The Kernels had their best comeback opportunity in the final frame. Michael Helman and Kyle Schmidt notched back-to-back one-out walks, and both runners were in scoring position following a Max Smith groundout. However, another groundout followed to end the contest.
Peyton Gray and Garrett Davilla were the relievers that helped Quad Cities close out Friday's 3-1 victory. Gray posted 2.2 shutout innings for his first hold before Davilla's scoreless top of the ninth led to his third save in as many chances.
Saturday's game at Modern Woodmen Park is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., and Kernels left-hander Kody Funderburk (1-2, 3.67) will pitch against River Bandits left-hander Asa Lacy (1-4, 5.40). Broadcast coverage with Chris Kleinhans-Schulz can be heard via www.kernels.com.
