PEORIA, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps gave up seven runs in the sixth inning to lose a four-run lead and fall by a score of 7-4 in front of 1,178 fans Friday night at Dozer Park.
The Whitecaps had scored first in each of the first four games of this six-game series had built leads of at least three runs in each contest of their set in Peoria but allowed seven straight Chiefs to reach base as six came around to score in the biggest inning against West Michigan this season.
The Whitecaps took control by scoring in the first inning for the fourth straight game, as Daniel Cabrera laced a two-run single to take a 2-0 advantage. In the third, a Cooper Johnson RBI-single pushed the advantage to 3-0. In the following inning, Bryant Packard launched the Whitecaps' longest home run of the season - a 452 blast off the scoreboard in right-center field - that caromed off the video board to help West Michigan extend its lead to 4-0.
Headed into the sixth, the 'Caps had led for each of the 28 innings of this six-game series, but Moises Castillo began the frame with a leadoff double before a one-out single by Pedro Pages. That forced starting pitcher Beau Brieske from the contest, who finished the ballgame tossing 5.1 innings and giving up two runs on the evening. Lefty Jared Tobey (0-1) got the first pitch he threw bounced back to the mound, but a throwing error forced the Whitecaps to miss their chance at an inning-ending double play to score the first Chiefs run and extend the frame. The following five batters reached base, highlighted by a go-ahead three-run triple by Francisco Hernandez to give Peoria the lead they never relinquished.
Emmanuel Solano (2-0) tossed 1.2 frames in relief for his second win of the season, while Tobey suffered his first loss. Chiefs reliever Cory Thompson fired a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. The Whitecaps fall to 25-25 on the season as Peoria improves to 20-32.
