Wojciechowski Wins League Honor as River Cats Series Continues
June 24, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Grizzlies pitcher Asher Wojciechowski was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 15-21 the league announced on Monday. The righty tossed a league-high 14.0 innings over two quality starts, while owning a 0.64 ERA and 0.86 WHIP.
The first start came in a 3-1 victory over Sacramento at Raley Field on June 16th. He limited the River Cats to a run on five hits over 7.0 IP to outduel Jake Peavy and pick up his fifth victory of the year. His second outing of the week came at Chukchansi Park on June 21st in a no decision against Las Vegas. The Citadel grad retired the first six batters he faced and allowed only one runner to move past second base throughout his seven-shutout innings.
The two starts have extended his career-high Minor League undefeated streak to 13 starts, which dates back to August 15, 2014. Over that span, he's 7-0 with a 2.99 ERA (27 ER/81.1 IP), five homers allowed, and 58 strikeouts.
The 26-year-old began the 2015 season on the Houston Astros Opening Day roster and made his major-league debut on April 9th in a start vs. Cleveland. Since being optioned to Fresno, Wojciechowski is 5-0 with a 3.54 ERA (22 ER/56.0 IP), 15 walks, 37 strikeouts, and a .272 opponents average (59-217) over nine starts.
Wojciechowski becomes the third Grizzlies' player to receive a PCL Player of the Week honor this season and the 50th overall in franchise history. The last Fresno pitcher to earn the honor was Chris Heston (2014), who recently threw a no-hitter for the San Francisco Giants.
The franchise record for most PCL Player of the Week honors in a season is seven, accomplished both in 2007 and 2001.
Grizzlies continue homestand tonight at Chukchansi Park
The Fresno Grizzlies meet the Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in game two of a three-game set tonight in Downtown Fresno. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Chukchansi Park, with general public gates opening at 6:05 PM.
The series will conclude on Thursday, June 25th when former Fresno Grizzlies pitcher Matt Cain makes a rehab start for the River Cats and opposes Fresno righty Brady Rodgers. The start by Cain will be his first at Chukchansi Park since the 2005 season that saw him set the Grizzlies franchise record for strikeouts in a season (176). He'll face stiff competition in Rodgers, who is 5-2 with a 2.94 ERA (17 ER/52.0 IP) over his last nine starts.
Additional promotions for Thursday night include a Burger Throwdown between Colorado Grill and Meltdown Bistro. The two will be selling two sliders for $7 out of concession stands along the third-base concourse near the Tecate Cantina. Colorado Grill's classic burger, which has won them the title of Best Burger in Fresno, will go up against Meltdown Bistro's "Juicy Lucy Slider," which is a grass fed beef slider stuffed with your choice of either blue cheese and bacon, or cheddar, bacon and mushroom. From there, it's smothered in melted cheese on a mini brioche bun from Max's Artisan Breads.
Moreover, the traditional Tecate Thursday will be in full force, which offers $2 24-ounce Tecate and Tecate Light through the end of the fifth inning, and $1 12-ounce sodas all game.
