Conley Stays on a Roll, Zephyrs Stop Express

New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Vinny Rottino and Juan Diaz hit consecutive home runs in a five-run third inning, and Adam Conley worked six scoreless frames to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs to a 6-3 win over the Round Rock Express on Wednesday afternoon.

In a matchup of two of the Pacific Coast League's top pitchers, Conley overshadowed Round Rock starter Anthony Ranaudo, the former LSU standout who entered the day 7-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 starts for the Express.

Ranaudo loaded the bases with one out in the second by walking Kila Ka'aihue and allowing singles to Rottino and Diaz, and a sacrifice fly by Jesus Flores gave the Zephyrs a 1-0 lead.

New Orleans broke the game open an inning later. Singles by Jordany Valdespin and Cole Gillespie put runners at the corners for Michael Morse, who lifted a sacrifice fly to double the lead to 2-0.

Ka'aihue drilled a one-hopper that second baseman Tommy Field could not handle in shallow right field, keeping the inning alive for Rottino, who swatted a three-run homer over the left field wall.

Diaz followed with a towering drive over the right field fence, his second home run in as many games, giving the Zephyrs back-to-back homers for the first time since Justin Bour and Mark Canha did so last August against Tacoma.

The six runs were more than enough support for Conley (7-2), who limited the Express to one hit over six scoreless innings to move into a tie with Ranaudo and six others for the league lead with his seventh victory. Over his last seven games, Conley is 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA.

Round Rock snapped a string of 16 straight innings without a run against Zephyrs pitching by scoring three times off James Nygren in the eighth. An error by Diaz opened the door for an unearned run on a Tommy Field RBI double, and Tomas Telis later added a run-scoring single.

Lay Batista retired the side in order in the ninth to record his second save.

Ranaudo (7-2) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in four innings.

The Zephyrs look for a third consecutive win over the division leaders in the series finale on Thursday at 7 p.m.
