Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate was the road team for the first time ever at Chukchansi Park, and the Fresno Grizzlies (43-28) made sure to treat them as such with a 6-2 victory Tuesday night in front of 6,031 fans. Fresno pitching locked up the Sacramento River Cats (30-42) offense after two solo homers and countered with six unanswered runs to get the series opening victory, which handed the 'Cats their fifth straight loss.
Fresno starter Luis Cruz (2 ER/7.0 IP) hunkered down upon spotting the visitors an early lead. He was extremely effective through the middle innings, as he didn't allow a hit from the third-sixth. Sacramento designated hitter Hector Sanchez led off the seventh with a single, but Cruz showed off his athleticism by forcing him out at second on a bunt by Jarrett Parker, and then pounced off the mound with two outs to retire Brett Jackson on a tapper to the third base side. Over his last seven outings (six starts), he is 4-0 with a 3.12 ERA (14 ER/40.1 IP) and 30 strikeouts.
Fresno scratched the scoreboard in the second with a two-out rally. With runners on the corners, Tony Kemp flipped a single into center that saw Nolan Fontana score and Andrew Aplin dig for third. The throw from Darren Ford bounced in front of and past Adam Duvall, allowing Aplin to jog home for the tying run. Kemp advanced to second on the error, and then made his way to third when second baseman Kevin Frandsen committed an error to allow Jonathan Villar to reach base. Villar quickly stole second to put two runners in scoring position, which Matt Duffy took advantage of by roping a single to left to give Fresno a 4-2 lead.
Max Stassi had a fantastic plate appearance an inning later with the bases loaded. After falling behind in the count, he worked it to 3-2, fouled off a bunch of pitches, and then drove a deep line drive to right for a sacrifice fly.
Three innings later in the sixth, Jon Singleton ended his 98 at bat homerless streak with a deep homer to right off lefty Jack Snodgrass. The long ball was his 15th of the year, tying him with Adam Duvall for the Pacific Coast League lead.
The two rivals meet again Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. The River Cats will send lefty Nik Turley to the mound, while Fresno counters with righty Jake Buchanan.
Things to Know: Tony Kemp went 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his carry-over hitting streak from Double-A to 25 games (13 straight with Corpus, 12 straight with Fresno) ... Jon Singleton extended his season-high on-base streak to 22 games by going 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks.
