Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. -- A grand slam stuck the Tacoma Rainiers with a 4-3 loss in the team's series opener with the Reno Aces at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday night.

Carlos Rivero gave the Rainiers an early 1-0 lead after hitting his sixth home run of the season and second over his last two games in the bottom of the second. The advantage lasted only until the top of the sixth, when Aces outfielder Peter O'Brien belted a four-run blast with two outs.

Tacoma mounted a minor comeback after posting a pair of runs in the eighth. Jesus Montero's RBI single and a sac fly from Stefen Romero brought the Rainiers within one, but Patrick Kivlehan grounded out to end the inning and seal a series-opening defeat to Reno.

Tacoma was held to five hits in the contest, led by a 2-for-4 night from the first baseman Montero. He now leads the Pacific Coast League with 88 hits through 70 games played this season. Shortstop Chris Taylor hit a ground rule double in the eighth inning to up his season-high hitting streak to 11 games.

Starter Justin Germano (6-3) was dealt the loss after surrendering all four runs to the Aces on four hits through 4.0 innings of work. The right-hander struck out seven and walked three in his tenth start this season. Relievers David Rollins (1.0) and Danny Farquhar (2.0) allowed just one walk through 3.0 shutout innings from the bullpen.

The Rainiers (35-37) host the second game of a three-game series with Reno (32-39) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, June 24. Right-hander Forrest Snow (5-4, 2.48) gets the start for Tacoma in the contest. The Aces have yet to name a starting pitcher.
