MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds overcame an early deficit to win 9-4 over the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds on Wednesday afternoon at AutoZone Park.
Eight of nine Redbirds in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit in their season-best 14-hit attack, led by three hits apiece by outfielder Stephen Piscotty and designated hitter Dan Johnson.
Nashville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Redbirds starter Zach Petrick, beginning with a Ryan Roberts sacrifice fly. Later in the inning with two outs, Jake Smolinski added an RBI single to right.
Piscotty answered with his 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the first, a towering solo shot over the left field wall.
Nashville's early scoring would conclude on a pair of go-ahead RBI doubles by Joey Wendle in the second and fourth frames.
Memphis knotted the score at 4-4 on Piscotty's RBI single in the fourth and eventually pulled ahead in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Cody Stanley and RBI single from Rafael Ortega.
In the next frame, the Redbirds put the game away with a three-spot for a 9-4 advantage. Johnson added two his RBI total with a run-scoring single and later scored as Tommy Pham tripled to extend his hitting streak to six games. Pham would later score the club's final run on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Wilson.
Petrick came away with a no-decision, scattering nine hits for four runs over 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander also walked one and fanned a pair.
Reliever Dean Kiekhefer struck out two over two scoreless while stranding three inherited runners for the victory. Right-handers Heath Wyatt (2.1) and Sam Tuivailala (1.0) preserved the victory for Memphis.
The Redbirds and Sounds conclude their three-game series at 7:05pm CT on Thursday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Thomas Lee (1-1, 3.00) will toe the rubber in the series finale against Sounds lefty Brad Mills (2-7, 3.56).
