Asheville Tourists News Release
The Asheville Tourists and Sinclair Broadcasting, owners of WLOS and WMYA, have entered an agreement to broadcast four baseball games on WMYA My40 during the 2008 season. The deal marks the first time in more than a decade that the Tourists will be aired live on a local station.
WMYA My40 will broadcast three Tourists games from McCormick Field as well as a road game from Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina. The station will air the contests live and in their entirety.
"The Tourists are thrilled to have WMYA broadcast four of our games this season, including three of our home games," said Mike Bauer, executive director of Palace Baseball and the Asheville Tourists. "We have been working on making this a reality for the past few years and to see the hard work come to fruition is tremendously rewarding. This is great exposure for our team and an outstanding experience for our fans, particularly those who are unable to attend the games on a regular basis."
The first televised Tourists game on WMYA My40 will be Saturday, June 7, at 7 p.m., when Asheville hosts the Greenville Drive. WMYA will also broadcast two other games from McCormick Field, including the Greenville-Asheville matchup on Saturday, June 28, at 7 p.m. and the Saturday, August 16, contest between the Greensboro Grasshoppers and the Tourists, also starting at 7 p.m.
WMYA My40 will air the Tuesday, July 1, game when Asheville travels to Greenville at 7 p.m. The station will also broadcast one other South Atlantic League contest, on Saturday, June 21, between the Hickory Crawdads and the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field.
"Working with the Tourists is an ideal situation for our stations," said Jack Connors, general manager of WLOS and WMYA. "The team's demographics dovetail perfectly with our market. We're looking forward to providing these games to our viewers this season and hopefully for years to come."
"We really appreciate the work that Jack Connors and the staff at WMYA have done in order to make these telecasts a reality," added Bauer. "This experience should benefit not only the team and the station, but the entire community. Even in this high-tech age, it's not often viewers and baseball fans can experience high-quality programming from a local standpoint."
The Tourists are offering special ticket packages for the three televised games at McCormick Field. Fans can purchase a pair of box seat tickets to all three contests and receive two Tourists caps for $69. Two general admission tickets to each of the three games with two free Tourists caps are available for $49. The packages are available now at the McCormick Field box office.
