Tourists Bitten by Sand Gnats

Savannah, GA - The Asheville Tourists committed a season high five errors and lost 6-2 against Savannah on Tuesday night. Connor Graham pitched six solid innings for Asheville and struck out six while allowing only three hits in a no decision. The Tourists (27-12) had a 2-0 lead after the sixth inning but Savannah placed six unanswered runs on the board, including two unearned, to take game two of the four game series.

The Tourists picked up a one-out double by Everth Cabrera in the sixth. Michael Mitchell then lined out to right. Darin Holcomb would then deliver an RBI single to score the first run of the night. Holcomb finished the night 3-3 with a walk. Jeffrey Cunningham would plate Holcomb with a single ripped into right field and the Tourists had a 2-0 edge.

The Sand Gnats placed one in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error by Connor Graham. Mathew Reynolds came into relieve Graham in the seventh and the Sand Gnats loaded the bases on three consecutive errors. Richard Pena grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to tie up the game at 2-2.

Craig Baker then entered with a runner on third base in the seventh and struck out Jordan Abruzzo to keep the game tied. Savannah then scored four times in the 8th off Baker capped off from a two-run homerun from Richard Lucas. Baker had allowed just one earned run all season long.

The two teams play a morning game on Wednesday at 10:35 with Bruce Billings (2-2, 6.37) on the mound for Asheville. The Tourists are currently 1-1 on the trip and have split the first six games of the season against the Sand Gnats.

The Charleston RiverDogs lost in extra innings 3-2 to keep the Tourists in first place with a half game lead.

The Tourists return home from their road trip on Tuesday May 20th for their first meeting of the year with the Rome Braves at 7:05 p.m. It will be another Kids Eat Free Night, presented by Papa John's Pizza, and the first of three Goodwill Nights at the ballpark. Bring any three new or gently used clothing items to McCormick Field and receive a free general admission ticket for that night's game.
