Captains Win 2nd Straight versus Power 7-4

Lake County Captains News Release


(Charleston, WV) - Joey Mahalic picked up his first win and Dustin Realini had three RBI's as the Lake County Captains took their second straight game from West Virginia 7-4. Adam White scored four runs and Lucas Montero walked four times for the second time this year. The top four batters in the Captains order were on base sixteen out of their twenty at bats. With the win, the Captains (24-14) lead the SAL Northern Division by three games.

The Captains jumped out in front in the first inning when they loaded the bases with no outs against Power starter Roque Mercedes. Dustin Realini walked and the Captains led 1-0. The Captains would not score any more in the inning and leave the bases loaded. The Power would tie it up in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Zelous Wheeler off Captains starter Joey Mahalic. The Captains came right back in the top of the second inning. After two were out Adam White and Lucas Montero both walked. White scored on a RBI single by Roman Pena with Montero taking second. Montero and Pena executed a double steal to put them at second and third. Realini hit a single to center field to score both runners and the Captains led 4-1.

The Power used the long ball off Mahalic to mount a comeback. Eric Fryer hit a solo home run in the second and Jonathan Lucroy a solo shot in the third and after three innings it was 4-3.

The Captains made it a 5-3 game in the fourth when Pena singled off of reliever Jose Garcia to score White. The Captains struck again off of Garcia in the sixth on another RBI single by Pena to extend the lead to 6-3. The Captains got a solo home run from Montero in the top of the eighth to go up 7-3. The Power added a run in the bottom of the eighth off of reliever Gary Campfield on Steffan Wilson's solo home run to cut the lead to 7-4.

Joey Mahalic got the win making his Captains debut going five innings allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out five. Kyle Landis relieved Mahalic and pitched two scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out six. He has struck out twelve batters in his last 5.1 innings of work. Gary Campfield followed Landis and pitched the last two innings giving up a run on three hits. Roque Mercedes took the loss to go 1-2.

The Captains play game three of the four game series on Wednesday as LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (2-2, 2.08) heads to the mound against the Power's LHP Dan Merklinger (0-1, 6.75). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

The Captains return home to Classic Park on Friday, May 16th to face the Lexington Legends. Friday is the second of twenty Fireworks Extravaganzas at Classic Park this season. All Friday and Saturday home games from here on out will be followed by fireworks.
