Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
The Shorebird offense was silenced once again on Tuesday night by Kannapolis, a 5-0 shutout in favor of the Intimidators that gave the home team a 2-0 edge in the four game series. Delmarva managed just two singles, a third inning bloop by Ryan Adams and an infield base hit by Tyler Henson in the fourth. Aside from that, Kannapolis starter Anthony Carter stymied the Shorebirds for six scoreless innings, striking out four during that stretch. Hector Santiago pitched the seventh, eighth, and ninth, earning his first save of the year while striking out six in his three innings.
Delmarva starter Chris Salberg was solid in his debut, but after retiring the first nine men he faced over the first three innings, he encountered trouble in the fourth. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out, Logan Johnson sharply pounded a grounder into right field. Right-fielder Joe Nowicki misplayed the baseball and it went all the way to the wall, allowing the bases to clear and Johnson to advance to third. A few pitches later, a wild toss, brought home Johnson from third, and Kannapolis led 4-0.
Aubrey Miller replaced Salberg in the sixth. After retiring the leadoff man, Johnson stepped back in the box and launched a monstrous homer over the right field wall to give the Intimidators a five run lead. Johnson's fifth dinger of the year was the final scoring of the game, more than enough for the Intimidators to take their second straight from Delmarva.
Second-basemen Ryan Adams made his 24th error of the season in the eighth inning to allow Greg Paiml a free base on a routine grounder, but Bret Bordes quickly struck out the side to get Delmarva out of the jam.
