Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - With the score tied at two in the bottom half of the fifth inning, Yefri Carvajal popped a ball up on the infield that was mishandled by Loons' third baseman Brian Mathews to allow the go-ahead run to score for the Fort Wayne Wizards en route to a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon over the Great Lakes Loons.
The Loons scored first in the ballgame in the first inning on an RBI single by Jaime Ortiz scoring Jovanny Rosario.
Fort Wayne took the lead in the fourth inning. Shane Buschini tripled home Zach Brown. Luis Martinez followed with a single scoring Buschini.
The Loons tied the game at two in the fifth inning with a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Justin Fuller. In the bottom half of the inning, the Wizards got back-to-back singles by Andy Parrino and Angel Mercado to force Loons starter Daigoro Rondon (2-6) out of the game.
Bobby Blevins entered from the bullpen and retired Justin Baum. Then Carvajal popped a pitch up along the third base line half way between home plate and third base. Blevins initially called for the ball, but was called off by Mathews. The ball hit off Mathews' glove and fell to the ground allowing Parrino to score. Mercado followed and tried to score, but Mathews flipped the ball to Kenley Jansen to retire Mercado at the plate.
Rondo picked up his sixth loss allowing three runs (two earned) in 4 1/3 innings. The Loons are now 1-8 when Rondon starts. Blevins worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Brandon Gomes (2-1) recorded the win in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Jackson Quezada hurled a perfect ninth for his ninth save of the year. Quezada has saved four games this week against the Loons (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).
Rosario finished the game with three hits.
The Wizards have won five of six this week over the Loons to pull to within a game of .500.
The Loons/Wizards series continues Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium beginning at 2pm. The game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on the radio flagship home for Great Lakes Loons baseball, ESPN 100.9-FM, and worldwide online at Loons.com.
