Whitecaps top Dragons, 2-0

Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Michigan starting pitcher Jon Kibler and two relievers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Whitecaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 2-0 on Saturday night.

Kibler (5-1) worked the first six innings for the victory. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out six.

The Dragons loaded the bases in the ninth inning against West Michigan closer Noah Krol. Devin Mesoraco singled to start the inning and with one out, Jason Bour walked. With two out, Angel Cabrera reached on an error, but Krol worked out of the jam by getting Keltavious Jones to ground to second to end the game.

West Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Roger Tomas doubled to right and scored on a one-out single by Joe Bowen. In the West Michigan fifth, Joe Tucker led off with a triple to left-center field and scored on a two-out single by Kyle Peter on a ball that glanced off the chest of Dragons second baseman Kevyn Feiner.

The Dragons only hits of the ballgame were a fourth inning line drive single to center field by Brandon Waring and Mesoraco's single in the ninth. They advanced three runners as far as third base. Daniel Perales walked and reached third with two outs in the third, but Kibler got Feiner to ground out to second to end the threat. In the sixth, a walk and an error allowed the Dragons to threaten with men at second and third with two outs, but Kibler struck out Mesoraco looking to retire the side, and Krol pitched out of the bases loaded jam in the ninth.

Dragons starting pitcher Matt Klinker pitched well but suffered the loss. He worked six innings, allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and four strikeouts. His record fell to 3-3.

The Dragons will meet West Michigan again on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Luis Montano (5-2, 3.00) will start for Dayton. Sunday's game broadcast has been moved to Kiss Country 101.7 FM in Dayton.
