Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts took both ends of a twin-bill Saturday night over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Oldsmobile Park, winning game one 1-0 in 10 innings and taking the nightcap 4-2. The wins helped Lansing tie their longest winning streak of the season at six games.
The Lugnuts won the opener 1-0 when Eric Eiland laced a single into center field in the 10th inning that scored John Tolisano from third base. Tolisano started the inning with a triple off of the right field wall, becoming just the second man to reach third base in the game for Lansing.
Each team's pitching staff was fantastic throughout the contest. Marc Rzepczynski turned his longest start of the year by throwing five innings and allowing just five hits. He also worked himself out of two jams in the third and fifth innings to keep the games scoreless.
Bryan Augenstein was not to be outdone, as the Silver Hawks hurler threw seven innings and allowed just three hits. He also fanned six in the game.
Edgar Estanga (5-1) got the win for the Lugnuts by tossing the final three innings for Lansing.
Billy Spottiswood (0-2) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing the lone run of the game.
Game two saw the Lugnuts take a 4-2 win to run their win streak to six.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, C.J. Ebarb and Tolisano smacked back-to-back doubles into right field to make it a 2-1 game.
South Bend answered back in the fifth when Derrick Walker singled to right-center, scoring Evan Frey to tie the game at 2-2.
Lansing quickly answered back though as they regained the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Moises Sierra drilled an RBI triple into right-center, plating Raul Barron from first to put the Lugnuts ahead 3-2. Kevin Ahrens would then drive a double into left that plated Sierra to cap the scoring at 4-2.
Brad Cuthbertson (1-1) got the win in the nightcap by throwing one inning of relief.
Cody Crowell tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for his fifth save.
Bryan Henry (0-3) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Lansing (27-22) and South Bend (19-29) will continue the series at Oldsmobile Park beginning at 2:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon. A couple of southpaws will be on the mound, as Brad Mills (3-2, 3.04) will pitch for the Lugnuts. Tom Layne (1-1, 1.82) will pitch for the Hawks. It will also be Kids Day, with Pepsi Kids Run the Bases following the game.
