Great Lakes Loons News Release
The Dodgers have promoted former Loons pitcher Clayton Kershaw to Los Angeles and have announced on that the left-hander will make his Major League debut Sunday in a start against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Kershaw, 20, becomes the first Great Lakes Loons alumnus to receive a promotion to the Major Leagues.
The left-hander, ranked by Baseball America as the Dodgers' top prospect, was 0-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings at Double-A Jacksonville. While with the Suns, the Dodgers have limited the prospect to just 25 innings per month in an effort to preserve his arm for a potential pennant-race run with the big league club.
He spent spring training in the Dodgers' major league camp and allowed just one run in 14 innings, striking out 19.
Kershaw spent most of 2007 with the Loons, compiling a 7-5 record and a 2.77 ERA, earning Prospect of the Year honors from the Midwest League.
Other accolades Kershaw garnered during 2007 included a selection to the MLB Futures Game in San Francisco, a selection to the Midwest League All-Star Game (in which he was the winning pitcher), the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 4, the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 27, and a selection to the Midwest League's post-season all-star roster.
The Dallas native was selected by the Dodgers seventh overall in the 2006 amateur draft. He was ranked as the No. 4 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball prior to the 2008 season by MiLB.com
To make room for Kershaw on the roster, the Dodgers' designated pitcher Esteban Loaiza for assignment and optioned reliever Yhency Brazoban to Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Great Lakes Loons are the second-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
