Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars and Quad Cities River Bandits were locked in a scoreless battle through five innings Saturday night until the Bandits scored in the sixth after a questionable call and eventually handed the Cougars a 4-0 loss in front of 8,068 at Elfstrom Stadium.

Cougars starter Craig Italiano posted another dominant effort, pitching five shutout innings of three-hit ball, walking three and fanning six in a no-decision. Italiano has allowed just one earned run in his last nine appearances, a 46-inning span. Reliever Brad Hertzler (0-1) took over the sixth and gave up the game's first run. Outfielder Shane Keough appeared to make a diving catch in right-center to rob leadoff hitter D'Marcus Ingram, but the umpires ruled it a base hit, which led to manager Aaron Nieckula's ejection. Hertzler retired the next two hitters, but Paul Vazquez's bloop single made it 1-0.

Hertzler gave up three more runs in the top of the ninth to account for the 4-0 final. The Cougars had seven hits but stranded 10 runners en route to being shut out for the sixth time this season. Mark Diapoules (3-0) got the win for Quad Cities.

The Cougars (29-19) and River Bandits (25-22) play again Sunday night at 6 CT when Jamie Richmond (4-3, 3.42) squares off against Blake King (1-3, 4.54).
