Lancaster Stormers News Release
Adam Witter went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer on Wednesday evening as the Lancaster Barnstormers took their third straight from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 5-1.
Lancaster stayed within one game of the Somerset Patriots, who blanked Camden, 2-0.
Southern Maryland reached Jose Sanchez for their lone run in the third inning. Ben Harrison led off with a single to left and moved ahead on a ground out by Rich Giannotti. Shaun Cumberland knocked a ground rule double to left center to drive home the run.
The Blue Crabs put together back-to-back singles by Justin Armiger and Travis Garcia to open the fourth, but Sanchez (5-11) battled back to strikeout Jeremy Owens and Christian Lopez. Ben Harrison walked to load the bases, but Sanchez fanned Giannotti to get out of the jam.
Lancaster used the escape as a springboard to the fifth inning. Witter led off with a double creamed into the right field corner and moved to third on a sacrifice by Michael Woods. Octavio Martinez found the screen in left center for his third homer of the season and a 2-1 Barnstormers lead against Joe Newby (6-4).
Reggie Taylor's defense took over in the sixth. With one out, Garcia banged a liner that bounced off the left field. Taylor played the carom and kept Garcia to a long single. Owens grounded out to Witter at first, and Sanchez walked Lopez. Harrison grounded a single into left. Taylor charged the play and made a strong throw just to the first base side of home plate. Martinez lunged back and tagged out Garcia to end the inning.
Sanchez completed six innings, allowing six hits and one runs while walking two and striking out six.
Ross Peeples and Pat Overholt combined to get through the seventh, and the Barnstormers were able to lock up the game in the eighth. Bryant Nelson led off with a single lined off the left field wall, and one out later, Mulhern reached on a single to the hole at short. Witter followed with his opposite field homer for a 5-1 lead.
The Barnstormers go for the sweep on Thursday night with Rick Bauer (0-2, 3-11) making the spot start for Lancaster against newcomer Brandon Mann.
