Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
In a back-and-forth affair Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium, centerfielder Jeremy Owens had the final word with a two RBI walk-off single to give the Blue Crabs a thrilling 11-10 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers. There were four lead changes, and the two clubs combined for 12 runs in the final three innings.
Lancaster went ahead in the top of the first as leftfielder Reggie Taylor hit a two RBI double, scoring second baseman Lloyd Turner and shortstop Bryant Nelson. The Blue Crabs cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the inning when leftfielder Shaun Cumberland knocked a leadoff home run into left-center. It was his 11th of the season.
Down 3-1 in the fourth, second baseman and Brandywine, MD native Justin Armiger crushed a game-tying homer down the leftfield line, his first of the season. Designated hitter Ben Harrison scored after reaching base with a one out single. On the mound, LHP Brandon Mann made his debut start for the Crabs. He tossed five innings and struck out a game-high eight batters for the no decision. RHP Rick Bauer started for Lancaster, but pitched just two innings, allowing one run.
The Crabs took a 5-4 lead in the sixth when third baseman Casey Benjamin hit a two RBI single, scoring Cumberland and rightfielder Jamar Hill. Lancaster surged ahead in the seventh though, putting up six more runs. The inning was capped off by a two run homer by designated hitter Adam Witter. It was his 14th of the year, and second in as many nights.Southern Maryland answered right back, as Benjamin scored on an RBI ground out by catcher Christian Lopez and a three run homer by Harrison. It was Harrison's second dinger of the season. Then with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Owens hit a bouncer through the left side of the infield, driving in Cumberland and Hill for the Blue Crabs' seventh walk-off win this season and 19th all-time.
RHP Jim Ed Warden (5-3) earned the win, while lefty Tim Hamulack surrendered the game winner and dropped to 4-5.
At 70-45, the Blue Crabs have the best overall record in the Atlantic League, and are 29-16 in the second half.
The Blue Crabs return to action Friday evening when they begin a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots at TD Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
