(Bridgeport, C.T., Aug. 26, 2010) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears 6-3 Thursday night in the series finale at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Bridgeport cracked the scoreboard in the home first inning against Derek Blacksher with eight batters coming to the plate. An Adam Greenberg solo home run started the game with Danny Putman and Luis Lopez adding back-to-back RBI singles. Joe Jiannetti's sacrifice fly plated another run to give the 'Fish a 4-0 lead.
Newark cut into the advantage against Esteban Yan in the second inning. Eric Munson, Manny Mejia and James Cooper connected on three-straight singles, with Cooper plating Munson to pull the Bears within three. Bridgeport extended their advantage in the third as Steve Moss, who finished 2-for-4, blasted the second solo homer of the game. Lopez and Jiannetti reached on back-to-back two-out hits with Lopez coming home on a wild pitch to make it 6-1 Bridgeport.
Yan surrendered just three more hits over his last five frames to keep the Bluefish lead intact. Newark tried to stage a rally in the visitor's ninth as Daryle Ward ripped a ground-rule double to right off reliever Luis Arroyo. The next batter, Carl Everett, connected on his 12th homer of the season, second from the right side of the plate, to pull the Bears within three runs. Brian Barton doubled for the third-straight hit of the frame to drive Arroyo out of the game. James Cooper reached on a two-out single off Jorge Julio to bring the tying run to the plate, but pinch-hitter Sandy Madera struck out.
Yan (2-0) got the win, tossing seven innings, scattering seven hits, with a walk and three strikeouts. Blacksher (1-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts over four innings of work. Julio picked up his 24th save getting the final two outs in the ninth. Brian "Doc" Holliday and Nick Renault provided four scoreless innings in relief for the Bears with three combined strikeouts.
Newark is back in town on Friday, August 27 to open a six-game home stand with three games against Freedom Division rival, the York Revolution.
