Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 26, 2010) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears 6-3 Thursday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
In the bottom of the first inning, Adam Greenberg led off for the Bluefish with a solo shot over the wall in right field. Greenberg's home run was his first shot hit out of The Ballpark at Harbor Yard during his three-year stint with the Bluefish. Bridgeport pushed three more runs across the board in the inning. Tike Redman followed the home run with a walk, and Steve Moss picked up a base hit to center. With one out, Danny Putnam plated Redman with a single to the outfield, which brought Luis Lopez to the plate. Lopez continued the singles frenzy with a hit to right, bringing home Moss and marking a career milestone with 1,000 RBI. Putnam marked the final run of the frame by tagging up from third on a sacrifice fly hit by Joe Jiannetti.
The Bears worked their way onto the board with one run in the second, shrinking Bridgeport's lead down to three. Eric Munson began the one-out rally with a single to right, and Manny Mejia put runners on the corners with a single down the line in right. The third single of the inning hit by James Cooper brought Munson home to record the Bears' first run of the game.
Four runs were not enough for the 'Fish. In the fourth frame the team added two more to the board to make it a 6-1 ballgame. Moss put up the first score with a home run leaving the park in left field, and two outs later Lopez collected a base knock to keep the inning alive. Jiannetti added to the hits column with a double down the left field line, and Lopez motored his way home on a wild pitch, representing Bridgeport's final run of the game.
Derek Blacksher (1-4) took the loss for Newark after four innings pitched. The righty gave up six runs on seven hits, walked two batters and struck out two.
The win was awarded to Esteban Yan (2-0), allowing one run on seven hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. The starter worked through seven frames against the Bears.
Newark did not go down without a fight in the ninth. Daryle Ward gave the Bears hope with a two-bagger to start the frame, and Carl Everett drove a monster home run over the left field wall, tallying two more runs.
Jorge Julio finished the final two-thirds of the ninth frame to shut down Newark's offensive threat. The closer gave up one hit and struck out one to earn his 24th save of the season.
