OSHKOSH, Wis - The Wisconsin Herd (19-5), the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, collected its 19th win of the season with a 131-123 victory over the Canton Charge (15-8) on Saturday night inside Menominee Nation Arena.
Six Herd players scored in double figures with three of the six tallying 20 points or more. Jaylen Adams scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Frank Mason and D.J. Hogg tallied 21 points apiece. Cameron Reynolds had 17 points and six rebounds, while Luke Maye tallied his fourth double-double of the season and posted 14 points and 10 rebounds in his return from injury. Jemerrio Jones fell just short of a triple-double and recorded 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in just under 25 minutes played.
Marques Bolden paced all Charge players and registered 22 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, while Sheldon Mac totaled 18 points, four rebounds and three assists in a reserve role. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Levi Randolph notched 15 points apiece and J.P. Macura and Malik Newman each had 14 points. Sir'Dominic Pointer pitched in with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
The outset of Saturday's contest featured a hot offensive start as the two teams combined to score 27 points (12-20 FG) in the opening 4:45 of the game. Wisconsin made 9 of its first 15 shots from the floor and ultimately cruised to a 38-point quarter. Maye and Reynolds sparked the offense as the tandem made all six of their shot attempts while combining for 13 points in the frame. The nip-and-tuck first quarter featured four ties and 15 lead changes as both teams exchanged blows. Despite the back-and-forth, the Herd ended the stanza on top as Shannon Bogues knocked down a 27-foot jump shot with just over a second remaining in the period. In total, both teams shot 60% or higher from the field and made a combined 13 threes, but Wisconsin escaped with narrow 38-37 advantage.
To start the second quarter, Reynolds picked up where he left off in the opening 12 minutes and made tallied the first four points of the period on consecutive baskets. The Herd scored the first six points and took a seven-point advantage which was the largest of the first half for either team. After trailing for the first six minutes of the quarter, Canton managed to jump back in front on back-to-back buckets by Randolph and Alex Robinson. The Charge's 60-57 lead was short-lived as Wisconsin responded with eight unanswered points and turned a three-point deficit into a five-point advantage. With the Herd clinging to a three-point lead in the final seconds of the frame, Adams connected on a running floater to beat the expiring first half game clock. Three Herd players scored in double figures in the first half which factored into Wisconsin's 69-64 lead at the intermission.
After trailing by five at the half, Canton began the third quarter on an 11-5 run to tie the game at 75. In response, the Herd used a 12-3 spurt of its own and jumped out to a nine-point lead. Down the stretch, the Charge battled back, erased the deficit and tied the game on three separate occasions. With the game knotted up at 91, Wisconsin scored four straight points and grabbed a 95-91 lead, but Canton made it a one-point game after drilling its 14th three-pointer of the game with point nine seconds left on the clock. The Charge edged the Herd 30-26 in the third, but Wisconsin maintained a one-point lead heading into the final 12 minutes.
The Charge tallied the first points of the fourth quarter on a free throw by Mac, but the Herd scored eight consecutive points and took a 103-96 lead. Later the in the period, Wisconsin proceeded to increase its advantage to double figures on an Adams' free throw. The Herd led by 11 points twice in the quarter and that served as the largest of the night for either team. With under two minutes to play in the game, Canton sliced seven points off the Wisconsin lead and made it a 120-116 game on a driving finger roll by Pointer. Despite making it a game late, the Charge were unable to push past the four-point threshold. The Herd made several free throws late in the contest and escaped with a 131-123 victory.
With the win, Wisconsin improves to 7-4 all-time against the Charge, including 2-1 this season. The Herd now owns a 3.5 game lead over Canton for the top spot in the Central Division.
Wisconsin will enjoy four days off before embarking on an early morning game with the Erie BayHawks on Jan. 16. Tip-off for the school day game is set for 11:30 AM on Thursday.
