Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks wrapped up their two-game set in Prince George Saturday with a 3-1 win, giving them their fifth straight victory.
The Cougars got on the board first when Parker Stanfield scored at the 13:14 mark of the first period to make it 1-0. Portland tied the game just under three minutes later when Chris Francis beat Prince George netminder Hudson Stremmel for his 25th goal of the season. Francis now has points in five straight games, while defenseman Troy Rutkowski, who assisted on the play, extended his scoring streak to six games.
Portland then took a 2-1 lead with under three minutes to go in the second period when Stefan Schneider scored his 11th goal of the season, as the Winterhawks took a one-goal lead into the third period.
The score remained 2-1 through much of the third. With under two minutes to go, Prince George pulled Stremmel for the extra attacker as they tried to even the score and force overtime. However, Ryan Johansen sealed the victory when he scored into the open net to give Portland the 3-1 victory. Johansen, with 21 goals, is one of five Winterhawks with over 20 goals this season.
Ian Curtis got the win in net against his former team for the Winterhawks with 30 saves, in his first start since Jan. 24.
The Winterhawks return home to play a Presidents Day matinee Monday at 2 p.m. against the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Memorial Coliseum.
