Winterhawks Win 4-2 In Kelowna
November 19, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks opened a three-game road trip Wednesday night in Kelowna with a 4-2 win over the Rockets. It was the second game in less than a week between the two teams, as the Winterhawks also beat the Rockets 3-2 Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum.
Ian Curtis got the start in net for Portland, his first action since injuring his shoulder on October 27 against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Portland opened the scoring Wednesday when Nino Niederreiter put one past Rockets netminder Adam Brown at the 14:19 mark for his 10th of the season. Portland then extended the lead to 2-0 at the 16:53 mark when Jacob Berglund earned his second goal of the season. Portland carried the play for much of the period, firing 19 shots in 20 minutes at Brown.
The Winterhawks then took a three-goal lead early in the second, when Brad Ross notched his 10th goal of the season just 31 seconds into the period. Kelowna got on the board when defenseman Tyson Barrie beat Curtis at the 12:35 mark, cutting Portland's lead to 3-1, a score that would hold through the end of the period.
Curtis and Brown then dueled throughout the third period, as the two teams were scoreless through much of the period. Then with a minute and a half to go, Brown was on his way to the bench for an extra attacker when newly-acquired Rocket Geordie Wudrick scored on a backhand to make it 3-2. It was Wudrick's first goal for Kelowna after being acquired in a trade with Swift Current earlier in the week.
After cutting the lead to one Kelowna pulled Brown again, but Brad Ross got the puck in the neutral zone, came in on a breakaway and sealed the win with an empty net goal with seven seconds remaining. It was the second of the game and 11th of the season for Ross.
Curtis was sharp in his return, stopping 28 of 30 Kelowna shots, while Portland fired 44 shots at the Rockets.
The Winterhawks' road trip continues Friday with a game in Chilliwack. The two teams met Sunday, with the Bruins pulling out a 5-4 win.
