WHL This Week: Looking Ahead...

Published on November 19, 2009 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, AB - The 2009-10 Western Hockey League schedule enters its third weekend of play in November with 20 games slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Next week will also be a busy week as the 2009 SUBWAY(r) Super Series heads west. Team WHL will face the Russians on Wednesday, November 25, in Victoria, B.C., and on Thursday, November 26, in Kelowna, B.C.

In Brandon, MB, Friday night is Team Poster Night when the Wheat Kings host the Calgary Hitmen. The Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Heritage Co-op, team up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to deliver a message about the dangers of impaired driving as the Holiday season approaches. Representatives from MADD will be at the game, and will hand out the Wheat Kings' 2009-10 Memorial Cup Team poster to the first 3,000 fans through the doors.

In Chilliwack, B.C., the Bruins will take time to honor Adopt-A-School sponsors and participating schools at Saturday's contest versus the visiting Kamloops Blazers.

In Cranbrook, B.C., Kootenay Ice forward Matt Fraser, along with the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and Denny's Restaurant, will host a Fundraiser at Friday's game versus the Regina Pats to help support his own and his Billet's families, who have both been impacted by health challenges.

In Medicine Hat, AB, fans will have Two Chances to hang out with their favorite Tigers' players next week.

In Prince George, B.C., Saturday night is Night Of Hope when the Cougars host the Kelowna Rockets. The event will honor Non-Profit groups in the community and share information about how people can get involved.

In Kennewick, WA, the Americans partner up with Team in Training (TNT) to host a Silent Auction on Friday night when they host the Everett Silvertips. Fans can bid on some great items, with funds raised going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Americans' players will also be trading their sticks for tools as they help out a local Habitat for Humanity work crew on Monday, November 23rd.

In Vancouver, B.C., Saturday night is Legends of the Rink night when the Giants host the Portland Winterhawks. The event will honor the storied careers of Montreal Canadiens' legends Henri "The Pocket Rocket" Richard, Yvon Lambert and Charlie Hodge.

SUBWAY(r) SUPER SERIES HEADS WEST NEXT WEEK...

The 2009 SUBWAY(r) Super Series wraps up next week with the Russians heading west for two games versus Team WHL on Wednesday night in Victoria, B.C., and on Thursday in Kelowna.

Team WHL Captains and Assistants were announced this week, with Regina Pats' defenseman Colten Teubert and Kelowna Rockets' forward Brandon McMillan set to wear the 'C'.

Teubert, a product of White Rock, B.C., will captain Team WHL on Wednesday in Victoria. The 19-year-old Los Angeles Kings prospect played for Team WHL last year, and is one of only two players on this year's team who played for Canada's National Junior Team at the 2009 World Junior Championship.

McMillan, a Delta, B.C., native, will wear the 'C' in front of a home-ice crowd when Team WHL plays the Russians in Kelowna on Thursday.

FRIDAY NIGHT WHL HOCKEY LIVE ON SHAW...

Brayden Schenn and the Brandon Wheat Kings (14-10-0-2) host Michael Stone and the Calgary Hitmen (19-6-0-0) on Friday night.

Friday's contest between the Hitmen and Wheat Kings can be seen live throughout western Canada on SHAW (7:30pm CT).

The Wheat Kings are coming off a 5-4 win in Swift Current over the Broncos for their eighth road victory of the season, and currently sit in third place in the East Division - 10 points behind the division-leading Saskatoon Blades. The Wheat Kings have not enjoyed a prolonged win streak this season, earning back-to-back wins just three times while winning more than two straight games just once. Brayden Schenn is riding a six-game point streak, having racked up four goals and 16 points in that span.

The Hitmen are coming off a 2-1 overtime win over the Warriors in Moose Jaw on Wednesday for their third road win in a row and their 10th road victory of the season, and currently trail Saskatoon by just one point for first place overall in the WHL standings. Calgary's power play is operating at an outstanding 36.1 per cent success rate (22-for-61) on the road this season. Defenseman Michael Stone scored both goals in Wednesday's 2-1 overtime victory, and now leads all WHL defensemen with 12 goals this season.

It's the second meeting of the season between the Wheat Kings and Hitmen. The Hitmen posted a 4-3 shootout win in Brandon on October 7th in the first encounter.

KEY WEEKEND MATCHUPS...

Everett Silvertips @ Tri-City Americans

Friday, November 20th

Brendan Shinnimin and the Tri-City Americans (17-5-0-0) welcome Shane Harper and the Everett Silvertips (13-6-1-0) for a tough U.S. Division battle on Friday night.

The Americans are a perfect 8-0 on home ice this season, and have outscored their opposition 43-16 through eight home games. Shinnimin will join up with Team WHL for the 2009 SUBWAY(r) Super Series next Wednesday in Victoria.

The Silvertips are coming off a 4-3 shootout win over the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday to improve to 7-2-1 over their last 10 outings, and currently sit seven points behind the Americans for first place in the division. The 'Tips hold two games in hand on the Americans. Harper (12g-13a) leads the Silvertips in scoring with 25 points this season.

It's the first meeting of the season between the U.S. Division rivals. Last season, the Americans won eight of 10 meetings versus the Silvertips.
