Winterhawks Win 4-1 in Victoria; Tie WHL Record with 28th Road Win

The Portland Winterhawks (54-12-1-2) defeated Victoria 4-1 Tuesday in their second straight game against the Royals (33-30-2-5).

The victory was the Hawks' 28th road win of the season, tying a WHL record with the 1999-00 Calgary Hitmen and 2008-09 Saskatoon Blades. The Hawks can set a new record in their final road game of the season Saturday in Seattle.

With the win, the Hawks have 111 points on the season, tying the 1978-79 and 1997-98 teams for second in team history, two points behind the team record of 113 points set in the 1980-81 season, with three games still to play.

The Royals struck first Tuesday when Taylor Crunk scored at the 19:32 mark of the first to give Victoria a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, but that would be their lone tally of the night.

From there the Hawks dominated the second period, with a four-goal outburst starting with a power play goal from Ty Rattie 4:01 into the frame. The Hawks took their first lead when Dominic Turgeon scored at the 10:21 mark to make it 2-1, then extended it to 3-1 with a goal from Brendan Leipsic at the 15:51 mark. Taylor Peters then made it 4-1 Portland with a shorthanded goal at the 17:17 mark.

The two teams then skated to a scoreless third period as the Hawks finished with the 4-1 win, and a sweep of the four-game season series over Victoria.

Portland was 1-4 on the power play and a perfect 6-6 on the penalty kill.

The Hawks are back in action Friday when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. in the Rose Garden.
