Winterhawks Weekly: Teddy Bear Time

Portland Winterhawks News Release

It's Teddy Bear Toss week! The best goal celebration of the year returns this Saturday in the middle of a third consecutive three-in-three. The Winterhawks will battle the Seattle Thunderbirds on home ice for the first time this year, and fans unable to attend can catch the action on Portland's CW!

Sandwiched around that thrilling night are two more divisional tilts. On Friday, the Hawks host the Spokane Chiefs at 7:00 P.M. for their second meeting of the young campaign. Then on Sunday, it's a trip north to Everett to face off with the Silvertips at 4:05 P.M. - catch that game on WHL Live.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Josh Davies tallied twice on Saturday for his team-leading sixth multi-goal game of the year. Paired with an assist on Friday, Davies has 19 goals, 12 helpers and 31 points on the year - rapidly approaching career highs in all three categories through just 22 games.

Forward Gabe Klassen picked up a goal and two assists on Friday, pushing his team-leading totals to 15 goals, 29 assists and 44 points on the year. The Hawks' captain ranks fifth in WHL scoring.

Forward Tyson Yaremko tallied his first WHL goal on Saturday, finishing off a beautiful play by fellow rookie Kyle McDonough. The 18-year-old now has a goal to go with the four assists he's accrued through 19 games, leading all Portland rookies in scoring.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni notched his first multi-goal game of the year on Friday to reach five tallies on the year. The San Jose Sharks prospect has 32 points in 24 games this year, leading all Hawks defensemen and ranking fourth among all WHL blueliners.

Play of the Week:

Josh Davies scored twice on Saturday, but we're just going to focus on the first of those. Just 50 seconds into the game, Davies flashed down the left wing on an odd-man rush and ripped a shot past Wenatchee's Brendan Gee. Nothing too fancy, except he shot the puck so hard it literally got stuck in the net! Swipe through for the goal and the aftermath, and enjoy.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 3 at Wenatchee 8 (Friday):

Two goals from Luca Cagnoni highlighted Portland's night, but a Matthew Savoie hat-trick and a handful of four-point outings helped the Wild top the Winterhawks 8-3 on Friday.

Portland 5 vs Wenatchee 6 OT (Saturday):

A dominant first 40 minutes for the Winterhawks turned into a tough final 20-plus as four unanswered goals from Conor Geekie helped the Wild to a 6-5 overtime win on Saturday night.

Portland 0 vs Prince George 4 (Sunday):

Nick Avakyan made 25 saves in a solid Winterhawks debut, but the Prince George Cougars proved too strong as they took a 4-0 win on Sunday.

The Week Ahead:

Another three-in-three awaits, including one of the best games of the year on Saturday!

First up, the Hawks get another shot at the Spokane Chiefs on home ice Friday night. Puck drops at 7:00 P.M. for that division rivalry contest.

Then, the stuffing goes sailing on Teddy Bear Toss night! We're expecting a sellout for what should be a fantastic evening in the Glass Palace as the Hawks host the Seattle Thunderbirds for the first time this season.

For those who need a refresher - fans bring teddy bears and other stuffed animals to the game, then launch them onto the ice after the Winterhawks score their first goal!

Puck drop for Teddy Bear Toss is set for 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, with doors opening at a special 4:30 P.M. time to allow fans to arrive early with their extra cargo! 🧸

Wrapping up the week, Portland heads north on Sunday for its third straight divisional game at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett. Tune in to WHL Live at 4:05 P.M. to catch that contest.
