Wheat Kings this Week: Four-Point Contest with Rebels Opens Triple Header

After a game where everything seemed to go right for them, the Brandon Wheat Kings are riding high going into a new week. It's going to be a much busier week than the previous one, however, starting with a game with big implications in the standings.

The opening act of the triple header comes on Tuesday, December 5 when the Wheat Kings host the Red Deer Rebels. In their only previous meeting this season, the two teams staged a goaltender's duel in Red Deer on November 24 with the rebels finally breaking through with only 19.4 seconds on the clock.

"It's a big one, no question," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "It's the first game of their road trip and they took two from us down there so we have an opportunity in front of us to do the same thing to them, and more importantly keep a good thing going and keep the momentum in our favor."

That momentum Murray spoke of comes from a pair of wins in a row over East Division opponents. First, they closed out a long road stretch with a 3-1 win over the Prince Albert Raiders in Prince Albert. Then, they unleashed their full offensive might on the Regina Pats on home ice, thumping them 7-1.

"I liked our effort throughout both games," Murray said. "I think they were pretty complete 60-minute games and obviously when you allow one goal per game you have a good chance to win. I liked our two games. PA was a textbook road game, and we got things rolling early here at home."

That 60-minute effort will be a necessity not only against the Rebels but with the Moose Jaw Warriors, one of the top dogs in the Eastern Conference, coming to town on Friday, December 8. The Wheat Kings and Warriors have each won a pair of games in the four games of the season series so far.

"We recognize that you're not just going to dominate for 60 minutes, that doesn't happen," Murray said. "It's about maintaining momentum and getting it back when you might lose it for a shift or two. For me, that was a big thing that we didn't let it get away from us when the other team got a little bit of momentum, we were able to steal it back."

The week concludes with a Saturday night showdown against the Kamloops Blazers. The Blazers haven't been to Westoba Place in four full years, as they were most recently here in December of 2019. They sit 11th in the Western Conference with a record of 7-16-3-2.
