Winterhawks Open Road Trip with 2-1 Win in Brandon Friday

The Portland Winterhawks (4-2-0-0) opened their six-game road trip with a 2-1 win in Brandon Friday against the Wheat Kings (4-2-0-0).

The Winterhawks struck first when defenseman Derrick Pouliot scored an unassisted goal 7:32 into the game. The Wheat Kings evened it at the 14:53 mark when Richard Nejezchleb scored to make it 1-1, which would remain the score through the end of the frame.

Portland regained the lead 12:15 into the second period when rookie Alex Schoenborn scored his first career WHL goal to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage, which they'd hold going into the third period.

The Hawks then stifled the Wheat Kings in the third, outshooting them 14-3 in the final frame as they closed the door and finished with the 2-1 win.

Cam Lanigan picked up the win in net, stopping 18 of 19 shots. The Winterhawks kept Wheat Kings netminder Corbin Boes busy with 43 shots, with Boes making 41 saves.

The season-high six-game road trip through the East Division continues tomorrow night at 6 p.m. local time when the Hawks are in Moose Jaw taking on the Warriors.
