Winterhawks Game Day Preview: Portland vs. Kamloops - Game #13

The Winterhawks are looking to follow up Friday night's loss with a home at the VMC on Saturday night. They will face a Kamloops Blazers team that made a statement in Seattle last night.

PREVIOUS GAME - Winterhawks 1 at Chiefs 4: The Winterhawks comeback hopes fell short in Spokane as the Chiefs win 4-1 in their return home.

Playing in their first home game in 20 days, Spokane found the back of the net twice in the opening 20 minutes. Carter Chorney skated up on the left wing side and scored on a screened wrister to open the offense at the 13 minute mark of the game. A little over a minute later, the Chiefs cashed in on a shorthanded goal, the team's first shorthanded goal of the year. Before the period concluded, Dante Giannuzzi made a phenomenal, highlight-worthy paddle stop to rob the Chiefs on an odd man rush.

Despite the Hawks efforts in the second period, Spokane was able to tack on another one; this time on the power play. Through two periods, Portland out shot the Chiefs 25-12 and Bailey Brkin turned them all aside.

Joachim Blichfeld found a bright spot for the Hawks by deflecting in a Brendan De Jong blue line shot to keep the game close at 3-1. This time, however, the Hawks did not have enough to come back on the road. Nolan Reid added a late goal to cap off the 4-1 Spokane win.

Goaltender Bailey Brkin finished the night with a season high 36 saves and was recognized as the first star of the game. Spokane played spoilers to Dante Giannuzzi's first career Western Hockey League start. The Winnipeg goaltender made 18 stops in his Portland debut.

TODAY'S OPPONENT:

The Kamloops Blazers are in town for the weekend after scoring seven straight goals on Friday night to beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-2.

Things just went well on Friday night at the ShoWare Center.

Forward Zane Franklin scored the second hat trick of his WHL career, netting the eventual game winner along the way. It could be the right time for Franklin to get hot. He leads all Blazers with two goals and three points against Portland this season.

Alternate captain Nolan Kneen scored twice to keep him over a point-per-game pace. Connor Zary also raked in a four point night (1-3-4), his eighth multi point performance for the second year skater.

The Blazers have won two in a row, but are 0-2 this season against the Winterhawks. Coming back from a suspension, Jermaine Loewen was named team captain. Goaltender Dylan Ferguson collected his second straight win, stopping 31 of 33 shots on Friday night. The Vegas Golden Knights product allowed 10 goals in under 90 minutes of game time against the Winterhawks.

This weekend represents the last two meetings between the two teams this regular season. Be sure to come to the rink early when doors open at 5:00 p.m. to partake in the Belmont Station Hawktoberfest. The Winterhawks partnered with local breweries to have free beer and cider samples for fans 21+. Be sure to use the M-M entry at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum to participate.
