Portland Winterhawks News Release
In their last game before the week-long winter break, the Portland Winterhawks ran into a hot Tri-Cities goaltender and fell 6-0 at home to the Americans.
The Winterhawks fired 46 shots at Tri-Cities goalie Drew Owsley, but he stopped all of them: 10 in the first period, 22 in the second period and 14 in the third.
The Americans got on the board first when Jordan Messier put one past Winterhawks netminder Mac Carruth at the 11:38 mark of the first period. Messier followed that goal with another one just over five minutes later, this one on a power play, making it 2-0 in favor of Tri-Cities heading into the intermission.
The lead became 3-0 at the 10:11 mark of the second period when Patrick Holland took a shot from the corner that ended up in the Portland net. Like Messier, who had two goals in the first period, Holland did it for the Americans in the second. He took a shot from the slot that beat Carruth with just over 21 seconds remaining in the frame to make it 4-0 going into the third period.
Messier completed the hat trick 12:49 into the third period, and the Americans added a goal by Brett Plouffe to finish with the 6-0 win.
Tonight marked the final night of games in the WHL for over a week as the league goes on its annual winter break. The Winterhawks return to the ice on Sunday, December 27 in Spokane. Their next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 29 also against Spokane at the Rose Garden.
