Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (42-22-2-4) dropped a 4-2 decision in Kennewick, WA, Friday against the Tri-City Americans (30-37-0-3).

With the defeat and an Everett win in Victoria tonight, Portland is two points behind the Silvertips in the race for the U.S. Division.

The Americans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 6:32 of the first period on goals by Austyn Playfair and Tyler Sandhu, a lead they took into the second.

It remained a two-goal game until 17:57 of the second, when sustained pressure in the offensive zone finally paid off with Keegan Iverson hammering a shot past Tri-Cities netminder Eric Comrie to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the third.

Portland evened the game 8:26 into the third when Miles Koules snuck into the slot, took a feed from Dominic Turgeon and fired the puck past Comrie to tie the game at 2-2. Less than two minutes later Sandhu scored his second of the game to give the Americans a 3-2 advantage.

Late in the third with Adin Hill on the bench for an extra attacker, the Americans' Beau McCue scored into the empty net to seal the 4-2 win.

The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Seattle to take on the Thunderbirds at 7 p.m.
