2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup Logo Unveiled
Published on March 20, 2015 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hockey League in association with the host organizing committee for the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup are proud to unveil the official logo for next year's championship.
"The province of Alberta is beyond excited to host its first MasterCard Memorial Cup in over 40 years," said Merrick Sutter, Senior Vice-President of the Red Deer Rebels and Co-Chair of the 2016 Host Committee.
This marks the first time Red Deer has hosted the MasterCard Memorial Cup while the Rebels become the first Alberta-based Club to host the event since 1974. The Rebels were also crowned MasterCard Memorial Cup Champions in 2001.
"Red Deer is located mid-way between both Edmonton and Calgary, connected by the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, illustrated in the logo. Rebels games, often referred to as the ' gathering place' for the community, will be no different for the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup, inviting fans from all over the province and the Country to experience great Western hospitality." Commented Sutter. " The logo also references the region's mountainous backdrop, along with the Northern star that guides you across rolling hills and the vast agricultural landscape."
The 2016 logo moreover features the traditional likeness of the Memorial Cup trophy atop logos for the CHL and MasterCard currently in their 17th straight year as title sponsor of the event, along with a poppy at the centre of the logo symbolizing the event's longstanding support of Canadian Armed Forces.
The 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup will mark the 98th edition of the prestigious national championship and takes place May 19-29 at the ENMAX Centrium featuring the host Rebels along with the champions of the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The 2015 MasterCard Memorial Cup is just two months away in Quebec City May 21-31 hosted by the QMJHL's Remparts. All games will be broadcast live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports and on Sportsnet Radio.
