Vancouver Giants News Release

Vancouver, BC - WHL Commissioner Ron Robison announced today, on behalf of the WHL Board of Governors, that Terry Bonner has been named a recipient of the WHL Distinguished Service Award for the 2014-15 season.

Bonner was honoured by WHL Commissioner Ron Robison in Vancouver this evening in a special ceremony prior to the Vancouver Giants game against the Kelowna Rockets.

Bonner, the current Scouting Director for the Giants, has been with the organization since the Club's inception in 2001. Under Bonner's watch, the Giants have drafted players like Gilbert Brule, Evander Kane, Jonathan Blum and Brendan Gallagher, while also adding free agent talents such as Milan Lucic, Cody Franson and Spencer Mahacek. Terry also helped to develop the Giants teams that won the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2006 and MasterCard Memorial Cup in 2007.

Bonner has been a scout in the WHL since 1991 when he began with the Tri-City Americans. As part of that group, Bonner helped to draft numerous future NHL draft picks including Daymond Langkow, Terry Ryan, Brian Boucher, Scott Gomez and Sheldon Souray. Bonner and his wife, Pam, had two sons, Scott and Craig, each of whom are currently general managers in the WHL with Vancouver and Kamloops, respectively.

"Given his long-standing dedication and contribution to the Vancouver Giants and the WHL, Terry Bonner is a very worthy recipient of the WHL Distinguished Service Award," commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. "Terry and his family have dedicated their lives to the WHL and he has personally spent countless hours in arenas identifying elite WHL players. These contributions make Terry Bonner most deserving of this recognition."

"I can't think of anyone that deserves this honour more than Terry," said Giants majority owner Ron Toigo. "His impact with the Giants from the start was a big reason for the success of the franchise with winning a Memorial Cup in 2007, and why we all feel we will get back there in the near future."

The WHL Distinguished Service Award, which was introduced by the WHL in 2004, is presented annually to individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on behalf of franchises and in doing so have made an extraordinary contribution at the Club or League level over an extended period of time.

Previous recipients of the WHL Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Mary Smith (Spokane Chiefs - Team Dentist); Dennis Coates (Kamloops Blazers - Volunteer Board Member); Judy Seher (Red Deer Rebels - Billet Coordinator); Balzer, Frank, Tony & John Lanz (Medicine Hat Tigers - Off-Ice Officials); Rose Mary Hartney (Moose Jaw Warriors - Education Advisor); Greg 'Spike' Wallace (Kamloops Blazers - Community & Sponsorship Coordinator); Nella Rounsville (Kootenay Ice - Education Advisor); Lorne Frey (Kelowna Rockets - Asst GM/Head Scout); Graham Tuer (Saskatchewan Hockey Association - Volunteer); Jann Boss (Portland Winterhawks Administration); Ruth "Grams" Pollock (Prince Albert Raiders - Billet Coordinator); Dr. Ian Hill (Regina Pats - Team Doctor); Dr. Alfred Blue (Seattle Thunderbirds - Team Doctor); Doris Rubel (Kamloops Blazers - Billet Coordinator); Colleen MacBean (Swift Current Broncos - Education Advisor); and Bob Ridley (Medicine Hat Tigers - Play-By-Play Announcer).
