Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks evened their first round series with the Seattle Thunderbirds Thursday with an 8-5 Game 4 win.
The Hawks' victory knotted the series at 2-2, with Game 5 Saturday in Portland at 6 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Portland jumped on Seattle early, with Chase De Leo scoring just 54 seconds into the game for an early 1-0 lead. Then under two minutes later they added to it when Alex Overhardt wired a shot past Seattle netminder Taran Kozun for a 2-0 lead. The Thunderbirds got one back late in the period when Ryan Gropp scored to cut the Hawks' lead to 2-1 heading into the second.
From there the Hawks poured on the pressure in the second period with three goals to break the game open. Portland went back up by two 8:41 into the second when defenseman Adam Henry took a feed from Keoni Texeira, eluded a couple of defensemen and fired a shot past Kozun for a 3-1 lead. Under two minutes later with the Hawks on a power play, Nic Petan used a defender as a screen and wired a shot that whizzed past Kozun's ear to stake the Hawks to a 4-1 advantage.
The Hawks didn't let up, and at 15:03 on an odd-man rush De Leo slid a feed across the crease to Keegan Iverson, who tapped a backhand past Kozun to make it 5-1. Following the goal, Seattle replaced Kozun in net with backup Logan Flodell.
Seattle got one back 1:17 into the third on a goal by Mathew Barzal to get within three at 5-2. The Hawks got that one back at 4:02 when Miles Koules won a puck battle behind the net and fed Dominic Turgeon in front, who beat Flodell for a 6-2 lead.
Seattle's Alexander True scored on a power play at 10:47 to make it 6-3, but at the 12:30 mark with Portland on a power play, De Leo made a great feed to Oliver Bjorkstrand, who fired a shot past Flodell for a 7-3 lead.
Seattle's Ethan Bear scored with 5:01 to go to cut it to 7-4, and Shea Theodore scored a power play goal with 2:50 to go to make it 7-5, but Petan added an empty net goal to seal the 8-5 victory.
Bjorkstrand finished with a goal and four assists for five points. Each team had two power play goals.
