Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs outshot the Everett Silvertips 35-22 but scored on just one of seven power plays on their way to a 3-1 loss on Friday night at Spokane Arena. WHL Western Conference Rookie of the Year Kailer Yamamoto scored his first career playoff goal for the Chiefs in defeat.
The Chiefs missed opportunities early, going scoreless on four first period power play opportunities while outshooting the Silvertips 17-7. Neither team found the net and went into the locker room with a scoreless 0-0 tie.
Everett broke the seal at the 2:21 mark of the second period, squeaking a second chance just inside the near post and past Chiefs goaltender Garret Hughson for his first goal of the playoffs. Graham Millar earned the assist after a spirited rush to the net that provided Aasman the scoring chance.
The Silvertips' leading regular season scorer, Russian forward Nikita Scherbak, scored his first career post-season goal just after the midway mark of the period, taking advantage of a two-on-one opportunity to push the lead to two. Brayden Low and Noah Juulsen earned assists, with Low creating space with a strong backhand pass across the ice.
Brayden Low scored his second of the 2015 playoffs at the 6:48 mark of the third period after Scherbak made a strong play to the net from the right wing. The goal pushed Everett's lead to 3-0.
Spokane showed some life with Yamamoto's power play score at the 10:53 mark. Jason Fram wristed a shot on net from the right circle and the rookie forward was waiting on the weak side, tapping in the rebound to pull the Chiefs to a 3-1 deficit.
Everett rookie goaltender Carter Hart stopped 34 of 35 shots on his way to first star honors. Hughson made 19 saves on 22 shots faced.
Spokane went 1-for-7 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Game 5 is slated for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night in Everett. Jay Stewart will have the call, with Mike Boyle opening the pre-game show on CBS SportsRadio 1510 KGA at 6:30 p.m. A Chiefs win would force a Game 6 in Spokane on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:05 p.m.
