Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks wrapped up their preseason slate with a 4-3 overtime loss against the Kootenay Ice on Saturday afternoon.
The first period of play came and went rather quickly compared to last night's contest. The Winterhawks would strike first on the power play 15:56 into the period from a slot shot by Haydn Delorme. The Kootenay Ice would tie the game less than a minute later to take us into the intermission break.
A few minutes into the second frame, the Winterhawks gained a rush as their power play expired and they would regain the lead. Cross Hanas fed a puck diagonally from the point to the right post for Seth Jarvis to pepper in a one-timer. The 2-1 lead would only last a 1:02 before the Ice responded on the power play.
Each team would net one goal in the final period of regulation to force overtime. The Ice would score their second power play goal of the game three minutes into the third, but the Winterhawks would earn a preseason point in dramatic fashion. After being assessed back-to-back minors with under four minutes to play in the game, the Winterhawks had to score shorthanded to force overtime. Jaydon Dureau would do just that. On a cleared out play, Dureau hustled down the wing and elevated a backhanded wrister into the net with 42 seconds to play. Clay Hanus and Reece Newkirk picked up the assists.
Since the penalty time rolled into overtime, the Ice had the advantage early and wasted only 42 seconds before scoring a cross-ice one-timer to win their second preseason game.
