Winston-Salem Drops Tight Contest Against Rome, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem Dash fell in game one of a six game series against the Rome Braves, 3-2, Tuesday night at Truist Stadium in front of 2,681 fans.

Rome (59-62) threatened early on, but Winston-Salem (57-59) starter Tyler Schweitzer got out of a jam in the first inning and sat down the visitors in order in the second. In the third, the Braves took the lead on a throwing error and took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

The Dash had put runners on in the first and second but could not push across a run against Rome starter, Jorge Bautista, until the third. Caberea Weaver singled with one out putting the tying run aboard and stole second moving into scoring position. Loidel Chapelli drove in Weaver on a single but was thrown out trying to stretch a double but did the job tying the game, 1-1. Winston-Salem wasn't done there. Jacob Burke drew a walk with two outs and moved to third after a single. With runners on the corners, Shawn Goosenberg drew a walk that skipped away from Braves catcher Adam Zebrowski bringing home Burke and giving Winston-Salem the 2-1 advantage.

Schweitzer was done after three innings and Noah Owen replaced him and held the Braves' bats at bay. Owen handled the visitors over three innings inducing weak contact and held the lead for Winston-Salem going to the seventh, 2-1.

Kohl Simas took over in the seventh but the Braves were ready. Simas walked a man with one out putting the tying run on, and a single and error put two runners in scoring position. Ignacio Alvarez tied the game at two on a sacrifice fly and the Braves took the lead on a single from Geraldo Quintero making it 3-2 in favor of Rome.

The Braves bullpen took over as JJ Niekro, Miguel Pena and Ronaldo Alesandro shut out the Dash over the final five innings, with Alesandro getting the final four outs to pick up the save as Rome took game one, 3-2.

Chapelli finished the night 3-for-4 from the plate, while Michael Turner picked up a pair of hits in the loss.

Winston-Salem and Rome meet for game two on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
