Diamond from Sierra Leone: The Dash and Pelicans played a weird and wild game to open their three-game series last night at BB&T Ballpark. When the dust settled after numerous web gems, ten innings, 15 runs, 22 men left on base, 30 hits, and three hours and 21 minutes of baseball, Winston-Salem walked-off an 8-7 winner thanks to Luis Sierra's game-winning sacrifice fly against Joseph Ortiz. The Dash managed just three hits and no runs against Robbie Ross over the first five innings, but the Pelicans could only manage four runs despite cracking 13 hits against Joe Serafin. The Dash scored five times in the sixth inning against Kennil Gomez to take a one-run lead, the last two runs coming from Sierra's third home run of the season, only to see Myrtle Beach tie the game in the top of the seventh. Winston re-claimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the pesky Pelicans scored twice with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to force extras. In the bottom of the tenth, three straight Dash players reached the base with one out to load the bases before Sierra lined a pitch to center field. David Paisano caught the ball and threw home, but pinch runner Kyle Eveland slid past the tag of catcher Zach Zaneski for the winning run. Ortiz, Zaneski, and Pelicans manager Jason Wood all protested the call and were served postgame ejections as the Dash celebrated near home plate. The win snapped Winston-Salem's three-game losing streak and kept the team two games behind Kinston in the Southern Division.

Stereo Ciolli: For the second straight day, Dash right fielder Nick Ciolli made a catch that landed on SportsCenter's "Top Plays" segment. Ciolli robbed Travis Adair of a grand slam last night in the fourth inning, banging into the same fence he tumbled over to take a home run away from David Mailman against Salem on Tuesday. Ciolli's most recent catch ranked number five on today's top ten, while his catch the night before came in at number two. The catch can be seen on the Dash's YouTube channel at youtube.com/wsdashbaseball.

Nickel & Dimers: Myrtle Beach is the best offensive team in the Carolina League and showed why for much of the night against the Winston-Salem pitching staff. The Dash allowed a season-high 19 hits, but only four were for extra bases. Despite scoring seven runs, the Pelicans had a hard time getting big hits, going 6 for 22 with runners in scoring position. They left 16 men on base, including an unfathomable 14 through the first seven innings.

Earning Time and a Half, Time and Again: Playing and winning in extra innings is nothing new for Winston-Salem. The Dash have played 15 extra-inning games this season, the most of any minor league baseball team. Only the major league Atlanta Braves (16) have played more extra-inning games this season. Winston is 9-6 this season when the game goes beyond regulation. Five of the Dash's extra-inning games this season have come against the Pelicans, with Winston winning three of those contests.

Jersey Boy: Yesterday marked the long-awaited major league debut of former Dash pitcher Hector Santiago. The lefty from Newark, New Jersey threw a perfect ninth inning in the White Sox' 4-1 loss against the Kansas City Royals. Santiago pitched for Winston-Salem in all of 2009 and 2010, and started 2011 with the Dash, making eight starts before a promotion to Birmingham. He had spent more than a week on Chicago's active roster before finally appearing in his first game yesterday. Santiago struck out the first batter he faced, last year's Carolina League batting champion Eric Hosmer. It was a bit of sweet revenge for Hector, who had given up a pair of singles and an RBI to Hosmer in their only two matchups last season when they were both in the CL.

MitchBlade: Jared Mitchell had another strong game last night, going 3 for 5 with an RBI triple and two runs scored. Over the last three games, Mitchell has reached base ten times in his last 15 plate appearances. After passing through a recent 1 for 21 stretch offensively, the former first rounder is 10 for 21 in the last five games with three doubles, two triple, a homer, four RBI, nine runs scored, three walks, and he was hit by a pitch (reaching base 14 times in 25 plate appearances for a .560 on-base percentage).

Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Miguel De Los Santos (0-1, 6.00) makes his third appearance of the season for Myrtle Beach and second start. He'll pitch against the Dash for the first time. He picked up the loss in his last outing, a start against Lynchburg on July 2. In four innings he gave up four runs (all earned) on five hits and struck out five. De Los Santos started the season with AA Frisco where he went 1-3 with an 8.04 ERA in six starts. His lone victory was in a five inning scoreless start on April 22 against Corpus Christi (Astros). He was placed on the disabled in May with biceps tendonitis and on June 23 made one start for the Arizona League Rangers (3 IP, 4 H, ER, 7 K) before coming to Myrtle Beach. De Los Santos came into the season ranked by Baseball America as the tenth-best prospect in the Rangers organization. He was signed as a free agent in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic and split his first three years between the Rangers' Dominican Summer League and Arizona League affiliates before visa issues kept him in the DSL in 2009. Last year he split time between Rookie Spokane and low-A Hickory and averaged 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings, prompting the Rangers to put him on the 40-man roster during the offseason. His changeup is ranked by Baseball America as the best in the organization, and he also throws a low-90s fastball and a curveball.
