Extras Unkind To Frederick

July 7, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

For a second straight night, the Keys squandered an early lead as the Potomac Nationals defeated Frederick, 6-4, on Thursday night in 10 innings. In the extra frame, 3B Justin Bloxom hit a one-out solo home run to right field to put the P-Nats in front. The Keys have now dropped three-in-a-row and sit at 7-7 on the second half of the year.

The Keys put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Cameron Selik. RF Steve Bumbry led off the inning with a walk. LF Bobby Stevens followed with a bunt single and then Selik walked SS Manny Machado to load the bases with no outs. DH Kipp Schutz drove in the first run of the night with a groundout to first. CF Miguel Abreu brought home Stevens on sac fly to center and 3B Dale Mollenhauer capped the three-run frame with a RBI single to center field.

The Nationals scored a run against RHP Bobby Bundy in the second but Frederick countered with another run in the third inning.

Luck was not on the side Frederick's side in the fifth inning when the P-Nats plated two runs. CF Eury Perez led off the inning with a flare into center field. SS Francisco Soriano followed with a bunt single and 2B Jeff Kobernus put down another bunt for hit as Potomac loaded the bases. LF Destin Hood hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Perez to score from third. With Kobernus at third following the Hood fielder's choice, Bundy threw a wild pitch that allowed Kobernus to score. Bundy struck out Justin Bloxom and 1B Steven Souza to end the inning but the P-Nats had cut their deficit to one.

Potomac tied the game up at four in the sixth on a Eury Perez sac fly.

RHP Kenny Moreland entered for Bundy with two outs in the sixth inning and tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

For just the fourth time in 2011, the Keys headed to extra innings with the game tied at four. RHP Ryan O'Shea entered the game for Moreland in the tenth. After Destin Hood grounded out to third for the first out of the inning, Justin Bloxom hit a solo home run to right field to put the Nationals in front for the first time on the night. Potomac added an insurance run later in the inning to put them in front by two heading to the home half of the 10th.

Frederick could not muster a run against RHP Hector Nelo as he notched his eighth save of the season. Ryan O'Shea picked up the loss and fell to 3-4 on the year while LHP Joe Testa improved to 5-0.

The Keys will try to avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Nationals on Friday night when they turn to RHP Oliver Drake (7-3, 2.24). Potomac will send LHP Danny Rosenbaum to the hill for the finale. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The first 1,000 fans to Friday night's game will receive a Jayson Werth bobblehead presented by Nationwide. The current Washington Nationals outfield was once a Frederick Key. Werth played in Frederick from 1999-2000. Fireworks will also follow Friday night's contest.
