Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- LHP Miguel De Los Santos (0-1, 6.00) at RHP Andre Rienzo (2-3, 3.44) -

POWER OUTAGE: The Pelicans' series-opening loss to Winston-Salem came in large part because of Myrtle Beach's stunning inability to convert high-leverage situations despite 19 hits on the night. The Pelicans went a head-scratching 6-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the series opener and left an absurd 16 men on the basepaths, including 14 through their first seven offensive innings. Against Winston starter Joe Serafin, the Pelicans cranked out 13 hits and only plated four runs, not scoring until the fourth. Myrtle Beach left the bases loaded in three innings on the night, including two against Serafin. The only game in which Myrtle Beach left more men on this year was in their 5-4 walk-off win on June 8 at BB&T Coastal Field, also against the Dash. In that game, the Pelicans were even worse with RISP, going 4-for-21 and stranding 17 but still picked up the victory.

HAVEN'T WE SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE': For the second time in as many weeks, umpire John Bacon's crew factored into the outcome of a Pelicans game. On June 24, with the Pelicans and Potomac Nationals tied in the bottom of the 13th inning, Bacon ruled a clear catch by Potomac's Eury Perez in left-center to not be so, and the Pelicans plated the winning run in a bizarre walk-off victory. Wednesday night, it was Bacon's new crew mate Ben Leake's turn. With the bases loaded, one out, and the game tied at seven in the bottom of the tenth, Luis Sierra served a fly ball to center field that settled in the glove of Ryan Strausborger. Myrtle Beach's All-Star center fielder made the catch and a strong throw to the plate where Zach Zaneski initially missed the tag on pinch runner Kyle Eveland. Though it appeared Eveland never touched the plate, however, home plate umpire Leake began signaling that the runner was safe with the game-winning run. Perhaps most indicative of whether or not he touched the dish at all, Eveland himself scrambled to his feet to touch the plate, where Zaneski applied a tag that Leake ruled too late. As the Dash spilled out of their dugout to celebrate a walk-off win, the Pelicans did the same to voice their objections to Leake's call. The home plate umpire began oddly ejecting Pelicans players and manager Jason Wood after the game's final run had been counted, and Myrtle Beach was left with nothing but a frustrating defeat to slip into last place in the Carolina League Southern Division's second-half standings.
