Tubthumping: The Dash got 6.2 no-hit innings from starter Ryan Buch and went on to one-hit the Nationals in yesterday's 7-1 win at BB&T Ballpark. Winston built up a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning and Buch was taken out of the game in the seventh with a no-hitter intact. Potomac collected its only hit of the afternoon with two outs in the eighth inning when Jeff Kobernus, who had previously been 0 for 22 against the Dash this season, lined a single to center field against Santos Rodriguez to break up the no-no bid. The strong pitching performance was supported by a strong day for the offense, which cranked out 13 base hits against Danny Rosenbaum, a season-high. The one-hitter was the first in BB&T Ballpark history and it sent the P-Nats to their ninth straight defeat.
Sugar, Sugar: Ryan Buch's home debut was as sweet as could be, as the right-hander pitched 6.2 innings without allowing a hit. Buch had some command issues at times, walking, five, but none of those men came home to score. He left the game after throwing approximately 104 pitches on a sweltering summer-like day. Buch became the second Dash pitcher to take a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Nationals. On April 11, Cameron Bayne allowed his only hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in a win at Pfitzner Stadium. The combined one-hitter was the Dash's second of the season. Winston-Salem one-hit the Salem Red Sox in a game started by Hector Santiago on May 13.
Who Let the Dogs Out: Winston wrapped a season-high 13 hits in yesterday's win with four players having multi-hit games. Tyler Saladino, Jared Mitchell, Jake Oester, and Jason Bour each had at least two base hits to lead the Dash offense. Ironically, Jose Martinez, the Carolina League's leading hitter, was the only Winston player held hitless, going 0 for 4 with two double-play groundouts on the day.
Tainted Love: Jason Bour seems to love hitting against the Nationals. The catcher, who has struggled for most of the season, went 3 for 3 with a double, two singles, and two runs batted in. Entering the game, Bour had been 0 for his last 14 with ten strikeouts. Against Potomac this season, Bour is hitting .500 (6 for 12) with two of his four doubles and three of his four RBI. He is hitting .111 (8 for 72) against the rest of the Carolina League.
The Final Countdown: Andy Wilkins, who today was named the Carolina League's "Player of the Week," extended his hit streak to a season-high-tying eight games with his eighth inning single yesterday. He is batting .413 (12 for 29) during the streak with three doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, seven runs, and four walks. Nick Ciolli owns a season-best seven-game hit streak. During his hit streak, Ciolli is batting .296 (8 for 27) with a double, a triple, three home runs, eight RBI, and five runs scored.
Mambo No.2: Since moving to the second spot in the lineup last week, Jared Mitchell has hit his stride and is playing his best offensive baseball of the season. He has hit in four of the five games that he has batted second, posting a .471 batting average (8 for 17) with two homers, a double, six RBI, and four runs scored with three walks and three strikeouts. In 40 games batting third, Mitchell hit .197-4-21 with 58 strikeouts and seven walks. His season batting average has increased 27 points since Julio Vinas moved him up in the lineup.
Achy Breaky Heart: All of the close games the Dash have played this season haven't been easy on the ticker, as 39 of the team's 50 games have been decided by three runs or fewer and the team has had a lead in 38 games this season. Winston has played 19 one-run games and 13 two-run games. The Dash are 8-11 in one-run games and 6-7 in two run contests. At this rate, the Dash would play 90 one- or two-run games this season.
Rock Me Amadeus: With another home run on Saturday night, the Dash extended their league-leading homer total to 47 on the season. Winston-Salem has hit eight more longballs than its closes competition (Salem with 39) and more than double than last place Kinston (22). The Dash led the Carolina League in dingers last year with 112 and the team is on pace to blast 132 in 2011.
Can You Dig It?: RHP Garrett Mock (-, -) makes his first start for Potomac in 2011 after beginning the year with AAA Syracuse. In three starts for the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate, he was 0-2 with a 9.53 ERA. Most recently Mock started against Pawtucket on April 21 and gave up eight runs (all earned) on four hits in two innings. He walked seven batters in that appearance and has walked 14 in his last two starts (5.2 IP). Mock missed most of last season after he injured his right cervical disk in April while pitching for the Washington Nationals. He appeared in two rehab starts with Potomac last season and was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in eight innings. Overall, he made six rehab starts with four different Nationals affiliates at the end of 2010. He has spent parts of the last three seasons with Washington and has a 4-13 record with a 5.17 ERA in 55 appearances in the major leagues. Mock was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He was traded to the Nationals along with LHP Matt Chico in exchange for RHP Livan Hernandez on August 7, 2006.
