Frederick Keys News Release

LHP Robbie Ross silenced the Keys bats on Tuesday evening as the Pelicans defeated Frederick, 2-1. Ross tossed a season-high eight innings and did not allow an earned run while striking out seven. The loss ended the Keys five-game winning streak and sent them 29-22 on the year. Frederick still remains in first-place, however, since Kinston defeated Wilmington, 1-0, earlier in the evening.

Pitching on just three days rest, LHP Nick Haughian took the hill Tuesday at Harry Grove Stadium. Haughian's toughest inning on the night was his first. With one out, 1B Jared Bolden singled to centerfield. CF Ryan Strausborger followed with a walk. After 3B Michael Olt flew out to center, C Zach Zaneski stepped to the plate. During his at bat, Haughian threw a wild pitch that moved Bolden to third and Strausborger to second. Zaneski then brought home both runners on a two-run single to left.

The two-run lead was all the Robbie Ross needed. 2B Bobby Stevens singled off Ross with one out in the first. Following the Stevens single, Ross retired the next 12 Keys batters.

In the bottom of the fifth, Frederick scored an unearned following an error by 2B Santiago Chirino. The Keys, however, could not muster another run in the inning despite have two men in scoring position against Ross.

Ross finished up his outing he tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning. The Nicholasville, KY native closed out his stellar performance by retiring the final 11 Keys he faced.

Frederick made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth against Pelicans' closer, RHP Ryan Kelly. With two outs, 1B Tyler Townsend was hit by a pitch. After Michael Rooney came in to pinch run for Townsend, RF Tyler Kolodny singled off Kelly into left field. With DH Adam Donachie at the plate, Rooney stole third base. With the game's tying run at third, Kelly tossed a breaking ball that was called strike three to end the game.

In the losing effort, the Keys bullpen was impressive. RHP Kenny Moreland and RHP Clay Schrader tossed a combined 4.1 scoreless innings. They allowed one hit and struck out four. Nick Haughian fell to 1-3 on the year and Robbie Ross notched his, Carolina League leading, sixth win of the season.

The Keys and Pelicans will return to action on Wednesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. RHP Bobby Bundy (5-3, 2.72) will get the start for Frederick while Myrtle Beach turns to RHP Wilfredo Boscan (0-2, 5.40).
