Wilkins Named CL Player of the Week

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 31, 2011) - The Carolina League announced Tuesday that Winston-Salem Dash first baseman Andy Wilkins was named "Player of the Week" for the week of May 23 - 29. He becomes the first Dash player to be selected for the weekly league-wide honor.

During the week, Wilkins hit .429 (9-for-21) in six games against Lynchburg and Kinston. He had a stretch of three straight games with a home run from May 25 - 27 where he also drove in five runs. Wilkins is in the midst of a season-long eight-game hitting streak dating back to May 22. His average has risen 23 points during the streak (from .243 to .266).

The Broken Arrow, OK native was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas. He was one of three 2010 Razorbacks to be selected in the first five rounds (Zack Cox, first round; Brett Eibner, second round). Coming into the season, he was ranked by Baseball America as the 19th-best prospect in the White Sox organization.

The Winston-Salem Dash and Potomac Nationals continue their four-game series Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. LHP Joe Serafin (0-4, 5.67) is scheduled to start for the Dash.
