THE HILLCATS: Monnday, the Hillcats had a their season-high four-game winning streak snapped by a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning, they lost 7-6 to the Salem Red Sox...Lynchburg's starter Chris Masters took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but a double and two-run home run knocked him out of the game...The Hillcats sit in third place in the Carolina League Northern Division, now 7.5 games back of the first place Frederick Keys...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 0-7 against the Red Sox this season...The two teams have met four times in Salem and twice in Lynchburg...Lynchburg has been outscored 50-23 in the first seven games...Last season, the Red Sox took the season series 11-8 over Lynchburg...Myrtle Beach (2010 Braves Advanced-A affiliate) fared worse against Salem, winning just five of the 20 match-ups...
YOU RANG SIR...: Salem catcher (designated hitter yesterday) Dan Butler went 3-for-4, with a double, two home runs, seven RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base as he led his team to a 7-6 victory over the Hillcats...His first home run was a two-run shot in the sixth inning that knocked Hillcats' starter Chris Masters out of the game...His double in the eighth drove in the tying run, making it 3-3 heading into the ninth...Finally, his second home run, was a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth with one out...Butler is now batting .318 (7-for-22) against Lynchburg this season, with three home runs and 15 RBI in six games...His 15 RBI make up one-third of the total runs driven in (45) for Salem against the Lynchburg this season...
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN': On the verge of losing their seventh straight (13th straight at home), and with the Hillcats having won seven of their last eight games, the Red Sox managed to pull off the unthinkable walk-off win, 7-6, against the Lynchburg yesterday afternoon...Lynchburg blew two separate three-run leads in the game, both matched the previous largest blown lead by the Hillcats this season...Myrtle Beach erased a 3-0 Lynchburg lead May 15, but the Hillcats went on to win that game against 5-3...
LET'S PLAY TWO: Lynchburg swept two double-headers from the Potomac Nationals over the weekend at Pfitzer Stadium...The Hillcats lead nearly the entire weekend, trailing only 1-0 after the bottom of the first in game two Saturday, and 2-0 after the bottom of the first in game two Sunday, but Lynchburg erased both deficits the very next frame in both contests...Lynchburg is now 6-0 in three double-headers this season...The 'Cats swept their first double-header this season in Frederick on April 23 (3-0, 2-1)...
DUST OFF THE BROOM STICKS: The Hillcats completed their first sweep of the season taking four games for the Nationals Saturday and Sunday...The 'Cats had failed in three prior sweep chances...Most recently, the 'Cats lost to the Winston-Salem Dash last Wednesday in game three of the series...It was the third chance for Lynchburg to complete a sweep this season, and first attempt at home...The first opportunity was a possible four-game sweep in Frederick April 21-24 but the 'Cats fell short 2-1 in the finale...The next opportunity came on the road again, in Wilmington May 2-4, but the Blue Rocks took game three 7-3 over Lynchburg...The loss in the finale brings the Hillcats record to 2-11 in the final game of a series this season...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Seven members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
WHAT A TRIP: INF Joey Terdoslavich has 13 multi-hit games this season, and four have come in the last five games of the Hillcats current road trip...After going 3-for-5 yesterday with three RBI, a run scored, and a career-high three doubles, he is 9-for-18 over the last five games on the road with a home run and five runs driven in...Hitting safely in eight of his last nine, he has raised his batting average from .246 to .274...He's now hitting .296 (29-for-98) in May after hitting .243 (17-for-70) in April...
BACK WITH A VENGEANCE: OF Adam Milligan was hitting just .224 (19-for-85) before hitting the disabled list with a pulled hamstring, which he injured on May 7...Since returning to action May 18, he has hit .333 (15-for-45)...He has a hit in 10 of 13 games since coming back, with five two-hit games...He has driven in 12 runs, scored eight, and hit two home runs in those 13 contests...Those 12 RBI more than doubled his season total, as he had driven in just 10 in his first 23 games of the season...He now has seven long balls on the year, the second-most on the team behind Joey Terdoslavich (11)...His batting average has risen by .38 points to .262 (33-for-127)...Had his first two-walk game yesterday, he's drawn seven free passes since coming back, after having just two before the injury...His on-base percentage has gone from .247 to .322...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER : RHP Pete Ruiz was selected in the 10th round of the 2008 draft by the Red Sox out of Santa Barbara Community College...Ranked second amongst Red Sox minor leaguers in wins (10) and third in strikeouts (109) in 2010 while pitching for Greenville...Had a 4.74 strikeout-to-walk-ratio in 2010 (109:23)...Recorded 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings on 8/13/10...Currently 2-2 with a 5.02 ERA...
