Potomac Nationals News Release
(WINSTON-SALEM, NC) Jared Mitchell's two-run, two-out ninth inning double sent the Winston-Salem Dash to a 4-3 win Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark, and handed the Potomac Nationals their tenth consecutive loss. Potomac, who carried a three-run lead into the eighth inning, again created a costly error late in the ballgame and fell one out short of ending their season-worst slide.
Garrett Mock worked around early wildness and registered a positive start; he allowed two baserunners in each of the first two innings but emerged unscathed. He went six scoreless innings with six strikeouts, allowed only four hits and left with Potomac in front 3-0.
Potomac - which doubled their hit total from Monday in the first inning alone - finaly broke through with a run in the fifth. A one-out walk to Jose Lozada was cashed in when Cutter Dykstra doubled to left to make it 1-0.
The P-Nats (18-33) padded their lead in the sixth. A pair of leadoff walks by Joe Serafin to Jeff Kobernus and Destin Hood came back to bite him. After a successful double steal, Justin Bloxom hit a sacrifice fly to left that doubled the Nats' lead. Steven Souza then roped a single to left to score Hood for the third run.
Rafael Martin came on to pitch a scoreless seventh and took the mound for the eighth. A one-out walk to Mitchell was compounded when Bloxom made his 11th error - and sixth in the last six games - to put runners at the corners. Martin then struck out Ian Gac, but the third strike was a wild pitch to the backstop and allowed Mitchell to score and make it a 3-1 Nats lead.
Hector Nelo was summoned to pitch the ninth. After striking out Nick Ciolli to open the inning, he allowed a single to Jason Bour, who had four hits on the evening. Kyle Colligan pinch ran for Bour and scored when Austin Yount hit a double inside the first base bag. Nelo then got Daniel Wagner to ground out to short, but was then lifted from the game in favor of Marcos Frias.
Frias then made what proved to be his biggest mistake of all and walked Tyler Saladino. Saladino crossed home plate as the winning run when Mitchell pummeled a 1-0 fastball into the right-center field gap. J.R. Higley and Destin Hood made a valiant effort for the ball and both dove, but neither came up with the baseball and the Dash (23-28) stormed out of their dugout to celebrate the win.
Potomac looks to Trevor Holder to end their losing streak on Wednesday night against Terry Doyle. First pitch is slated for 7:00 P.M, and the broadcast can be heard on [http://www.potomacnationals.com/] www.potomacnationals.com beginning at 6:45.
